Steelers Rookie DE Nick Williams Injures Knee During Wednesday Practice

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now wrapped up their Wednesday training camp practice that included some live tackling. Head coach Mike Tomlin indicated that they will continue to ramp up the live tackling perhaps more this year in training camp than other years because he feels that it is appropriate.

“It\’s just appropriate in today\’s NFL,” said Tomlin. “You know we\’ve got off days. We only get a chance to practice once a day and those type things. There are fewer and fewer opportunities to sort themselves out. We\’ve got to sort through a lot of young guys. We\’ve got to take advantage of the opportunities to show and improve and that\’s what that\’s about.”

As far as injuries on Wednesday, Tomlin said rookie defensive end Nick Williams, the Steelers seventh-round draft pick this past April, suffered a knee injury and that he needs to be evaluated. Tomlin also said the hamstring injury suffered by cornerback DeMarcus Van Dyke on Monday could be significant. That means the young cornerback will more than likely be sidelined a while.

As far as the other injured players, cornerback Cortez Allen (knee) and rookie cornerback Terry Hawthorne (knee) remain status quo, according to Tomlin and he termed them as being day-to-day.

There are no changes in the status of the four players on the PUP list outside of it beng reported on Wednesday that tight end David Johnson (knee) needed another procedure done on his knee.

We will have our normal full practice recap later on this evening.
