Report: Steelers TE Matt Spaeth Expected To Be Out 8-10 Weeks With Lisfranc Sprain

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette now reports that Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Matt Spaeth has Lis Franc sprain and is expected to be out 8-10 weeks.

This doesn\’t sound like it will end his season like the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported as being possible, but the Steelers might be forced to use the injured reserve with designation to return tag on him if they feel he can be back later in the season. They wont have to make that decision for several weeks, however, so they should have a better idea of where his rehab is at come the final cut down date.

Regardless, he will be sidelined for the start of the regular season, so that\’s the short term look at it.

Just a reminder, the Injured Reserve-Designated to Return List would require a player to remain out of practices for the first six weeks, and would be eligible to return to games eight weeks after being placed on the list. So if Spaeth were to be placed on that list, it seems his earliest appearance would be Week 9 against the Patriots on November 3rd.

I think it’s fair to say we probably won’t see him come back until late November, early December. He has to have time for his foot to heal, plus time to get back into game shape.

Maybe its time to find a free agent TE. Maybe Dallas Clark or Todd Heap?

  • Paul

Just a bad signing from the getgo

  • SteelersDepot

which is about 12 weeks from now. that should be about the time he needs to fully recover. roster spots are golden. not sure you want to use one on him to save 3 weeks

  • Paul

Heap and Heath on the field at the same time, the fans would go crazy

Thanks, but in this case, I’ll take the Steelers evaluation of Matt Spaeth over yours any day of the week!

  • SteelersDepot

    Are you nuts?

  • Paul

    No are you?

  • Mike.H

Expect even more TE signings than we’d already witnessed.

Paul, you made me upvote damfan, and look at HIM.

This just adds salt to the wound for a team that already has depth issues. That’s a more signification loss than Plax because it seemed like they were going to utilize Spaeth in a lot of packages this season.
