I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Mike.H

First round pick #24 waived by Philly… Danny Watkins.

  • Matt Manzo

Can someone explain to me us keeping Green over Hawthorne?

  • Jason Brant

    I’m wondering the same thing.

  • NimbusHex

I was wondering the same thing.

  • reg38

Hawthorne was hurt most of preseason. No worries he will be on the practice squad.

  • Mike.H

    Perhaps it’s alphabetical…?

  • Shannon Stephenson

The biggest surprises making the roster were Green and Fangupo. The other big surprise was not one 2013 UDFA made the roster with a couple of them playing very well.

  • AndyR34

OK…somebody convince me that this 53 is better than last years! And I don’t want to hear about the ‘upside’ of six rookies and two 1st year guys. Other than RB…where are we better?

  • Shannon Stephenson

Hawthorne did nothing to warrant a roster spot although I will say I do not feel any other of the bubble guys( Green as 1 of them) didn’t do enough for them to drop a 5th rounder for them.

  • Shannon Stephenson

He was a poor 1st round pick to start with but I am still a bit surprised he was cut.

  • dgh57

If the good stable of LBers we had in camp wasn’t enough to knock Carter off the roster, I don’t know what will!!

  • Matthew Marczi

Green played and was healthy and did well on both defense and special teams. Hawthorne should be a lock for the practice squad. Green was the team’s highest-rated CB during the preseason from PFF actually. Hawthorne just missed too much time this offseason with a knee injury.

  • Matthew Marczi

The starting offensive line, for one. The defensive line is better as well. With Harrison being injured and a rotation at OLB, and LaMarr Woodley healthier and in better shape, that spot could easily be better as well. The ILB depth is better this year. Cortez Allen may soon be a better starter than Keenan Lewis, but obviously the nickel back will be a downgrade…unless Shamarko Thomas can take hold of that spot. Troy Polamalu also looks like Troy Polamalu again. Have faith!

  • MrTeabag

    Andy,

The roster doesn’t have to be any better. We would have been 10 and 6 and made the playoffs if not for the rash of injuries. We will be again. Just look at our schedule.

  • MrTeabag

    dgh,

Carter made the team based on the last games performance. He is liked by the coaches for special teams. Also the team is taking a calculated risk on the roster that players like Arnfelt, Baxter, and McFadden will slide unseen on to the practice squad. Carter can’t go to the practice squad. I hope the risk pans out like it did a few years ago with Isaac Redman.

  • Brendon Glad

I “like” him. I see him as a definite guy to be on the horn with.
“Like” is in quotes because I’m a Steelers fan. So the OL is always on my mind as far as “needing upgrades”.
If he’s not better than Guy Whimper then he may be needing to find another line of work.

  • Jollyrob68

I hope so because I wanted Arnfelt & McFadden on the 53 man roster

  • T R

agreeing with M. Marci and add also Big Ben is heather and better for the time being too… only thing that is worst then last season at this point right now is the TE position with Heath out.. Not saying the team is way better at this point but they are better. LOL

  • dgh57

Carter looked good in his last game because of who he was going up against which weren’t starters. Yes, it’s a BIG TIME risk with trying to get Arnfelt, Baxter, McFadden and even Ta’amu to the PS! I have a feeling at least 1 of those 4 are gone!

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Im not happy with this roster neither whimper is a bum who shouldnt even be playing this sport chris carter waited till his job was on the line to perform and to me one game out of three yrs is not enough for me gay really his name says it all about how he play this manly sport which could be the reason brown played like shiii im mean we were the only team that went 0-4 after they cried that they have something to prove this yr but yet they keep the key players that was the cause of their defeats i love the draft class an udfa that made noise but they let a few go to ps for another team can take them so if we have a losing season its no ones fault but the coaching staff

  • Venkar

What percent of our salary cap is spent on each position group? Is this very different than other NFL teams?

  • Matthew Marczi

I don’t think they try to put Ta’amu on the PS. He’s the fourth-string nose tackle essentially. I expect the other three to make it though, with one of them (probably McFadden) returning to the 53 when Spaeth is put on IR on Tuesday.

  • NW86

Wow, he must have been REALLY bad for them to cut him right away after investing that much in him. As a first rounder I assume at least his first 3 years are guaranteed too…

  • NW86

The Steelers spend more in linebackers and safeties than most teams. I know you can’t post links on here, but there is a site called overthecap that is a great source for this kind of stuff.

  • walter mason

I keep thinking of Carter’s spin move that rarely works.

  • j m

    He was drafted in 2011.

  • j m

Moye — cut by Dolphins, makes it with us.
Fangopu- cut by Seattle, makes it with us.
    F. Jones — cut by Dallas and Philly, makes it with us.
Kion Wilson — cut by Charges and Panthers, makes it with us.
Whimper — cut by Giants and Jaguars, makes it with us.
    W. Gay – unwanted by Arizona, but we re-sign him because we are “comfortable” with him.
And in the 4th Round of the 2013 draft, Steelers select….a 3rd string QB.
And why not draft a third-stringer in rd. 4? It’s not like we need talent upgrades at any other positions.

  • NW86

Oh, from the post it sounded like a current pick. Makes it a little less shocking, still a pretty far fall for a first rounder though.

  • AndyR34

Matthew – I do respect your opinion, but…the OL is only better on paper…it has shown nothing so far in pre-season…Pouncey appears to have regressed, and Adams & Gilbert are still only Adams & Gilbert. Maybe later this year, but definitely not showing it so far. OLB may or may not be better…did not live up to expectations last year, but the jury is still out for this year. If Woodley gets hurt…he has a history…OLB is not a position of strength. I will give you ILB depth…they will play less than 100 snaps this year…LOL! CB’s are not improved…Cortez may become better than Lewis, but that is not necessarily a reality yet..and as you acknowledge, Gay is not a step up from Cortez…neither will a rookie (Thomas) be. Remember…even Troy did not play much his first year! And no way are DCS, Shark, and Golden better than Allen, Mundy, and Golden…even on ST! Lastly…any team that has G. Whimper on the roster cannot be considered improved.

To Mr. T and TR – Schedule may or may not be easier…Cincy and Brownies are improved…we may not be…but Ratbirds may not be either. Others are too difficult to know…and injuries WILL happen…Ben virtually always misses games and does not play well when hurt.

  • AndyR34

jm – I have a lot of reservations about this roster, but some players are late bloomers…Deebo, Kiesel, Clark to name a few. The teams you mention are mostly “losers” who do not have the time, patience, or inclination to develop players. Gay was cut by AZ, not because he payed poorly, but because they did not want to pay the performance bonuses that he earned. And F. Jones was stuck behind some other RB’s. However, I will give you Whimper…any team that has him on the roster cannot have realistic SB aspirations

  • j m

    I’m worried. Very worried.

  • dgh57

What happened to Ta’amu? He looked good in the Giants game!

  • Matthew Marczi

They just liked Fangupo more, and he supposedly fit in with the group better. For what it’s worth, I also thought Fangupo outplayed Ta’amu in the last preseason game, when they both saw the most snaps, even though I predicted they would stick with Ta’amu.

  • Rickey Brewer

Im oldschool steeler fan i agree with jm i dont get it we still holding on to SORRY!!!! Will Gay he should have stayed where he was our owners drinking to much we need to kick him to da curb along with whimper somtimes i dont know what we be thinking i know we better than that foolishness steelers nation

  • Rickey Brewer

I really really agree im upset with roster moves that we made we might still get through the season with it i belive its gona be tough
