Mike Tomlin Likens Play Of New Tight End Richard Gordon To That Of David Johnson

On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed free agent tight end Richard Gordon to the roster to replace tight end David Johnson, who was placed on injured reserve with a wrist injury that he suffered Sunday in the win over the New York Jets. Head coach Mike Tomlin talked briefly about the former sixth-round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders during his weekly press conference.

"We just decided to strengthen ourselves in the very best way possible," said Tomlin when asked about the decision to add Gordon. "Richard Gordon was a tight end that had similar attributes as David [Johnson] in that he's a strong run performer and he's healthy and ready to go and performed for us in a workout yesterday."

Gordon, who made the conversion from a defensive lineman to tight end while at the University of Miami, saw action at tight end and fullback positions in 14 games played as a rookie with the Raiders in 2011. In 2012, he played in 13 games with one start and has logged a total of 138 offensive snaps during his short career.

The Steelers certainly see Gordon as a run blocker as he only has three career catches for 11 yards. In addition, Gordon will likely be asked to contribute on special teams as he has 15 registered career tackles.

With veteran Matt Spaeth likely still a few weeks away from being able to return, Gordon, once he gets up to speed, could see a few snaps on offense over the course of the next few weeks as second-year tight end David Paulson has been a huge liability in the blocking department as has Michael Palmer.

"Obviously, we have to get to know him and evaluate his ability to learn," said Tomlin on Gordon.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Pretty ridiculous how injuries continue to effect the same positions, namely OL and TE

  • NW86

I can’t say I really understand the need to get a 4th TE back on the roster, with Spaeth making 5 in a couple weeks. If this guy they found on the street is better than Paulson or Palmer, why are those guys on the roster?

  • Afrazier9

Those are the same questions i ask why not let one or two go SMH

  • Afrazier9

Its almost retarded to me why not bring in a tackle to strengthen that department

  • SteelersDepot

we are waiting for your tackle suggestions.

  • Dr. Doom

If a tackle is available on 10/15 there is a reason. just because they are getting something out of the half eaten cheeseburger (Velasco) does not mean it will happen twice.

  • Dr. Doom

His salary is not guaranteed they could cut him next tuesday and would not mean a thing.

  • Shannon Stephenson

This does not bode well for Paulson. He is still young and maybe another year will do him some good but he isn’t even considered an option at this point. Hope his bagging skills at the local supermarket is up to the standard.

  • Eric

I will miss DJ. He is both a blocker and a receiver, unlike the other backups.

  • dgh57

If we don’t sign Gorden then that means Paulson sees the field more and none of us want that.

  • Eric

I thought the injury bug was biting TE’s and Cornerbacks. L.Brown was the first OT injury. It just seems like the other OT’s were playing injured.

  • PA2AK

    hahaha

  • PA2AK

i really hope the coaching staff feels the same way. no targets in the pass game and continuously misses blocks or gets blown up. and he looks pathetic in motion.

  • RedCarpetDefense

We should’ve bundled him up with Adrian Robinson in the trade with the Eagles and gotten another player along with Felix. My thinking was that he could have been reunited with his college coach, assuming Chip wanted him.

  • RedCarpetDefense

I guess we can now add (not that I haven’t already) TE to our draft needs to go with CB, LB, S, OT/G.

  • steeltown

We’re healthy at CB for the most part, besides that initial influx of injuries that included Cortez Allen.. But at OL Pouncey, Embernate and now Levi Brown on IR and Foster just returned from a pectoral strain, not to mention the stabbing of Mike Adams

  • RedCarpetDefense

Reading your comment reminded me of the newly acquired Ravens OT Eugene Monroe highlight (lowlight actually) of him getting beat around the end and Flacco getting crushed. Ozzie probably upchucked whatever he was sipping on at that moment. Would’ve have loved for a camera to catch his reaction to that play.

  • Eric

Agreed re O-line. I thought you meant tackle. My bad.

  • Douglas Andrews

Last year what was it LB’s and O Lineman? strange huh

  • Douglas Andrews

He looks like an awful pickup for the Ravens and they gave up draft a 4th and a 5th rounder in 2014 for that! Steeler Nation would be calling for someone’s head

  • MC

The Spaeth pickup looks like a smart one now. I’m just happy Ramon Foster didn’t re injure that pec. I don’t know why we don’t dress Mike Adams though. They need to stop this doghouse thing as Mike Adams clearly has more of a future at tackle than Beachum and with how often these guys get injured they should dress one more lineman to prepare for it.

  • r4kolb

Correct but to NW86′s point…if Paulson is that bad why is he on the roster?

  • T R

WE lucky to even got Felix from Philly.. they cut Adrian and Adrian Robinson was just got cut from Denver i think i saw…

  • steeltown

and RB if I remember correctly… of course we always have RBs injured

  • steeltown

Agree for the most part.. I definitely think he’ll dress the remainder of the season

  • SteelerDawg4128

I’d like to see Palmer given a little more of an opportunity. He’s not the pass catcher Miller is obviously but he’s a much better blocker than Paulson. Not seeing what the staff sees in Paulson yet.

  • SteelerDawg4128

Has to salary cap related wouldn’t you think? I’m sure he’s pretty low as a cap hit.

  • Steeler Wheeler

When that burger was tossed out was it above the rim?

  • dgh57

That’s a good question as to why Paulson is still on the roster. 2 reasons I can think of: 1. Special Teams and they hope he develops into a decent receiver. I doubt he’s that good of a STer and while he might develop into a decent receiver there’s no chance as a blocker, something TEs are required to do. So it seems only Tomlin & Co. can answer that question.
