Report: Steelers To Start Kelvin Beachum At Left Tackle Against The Jets

According to Josina Anderson of, Kelvin Beachum was the starting left tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers during their Tuesday practice and is expected to start at the position a week from Sunday against the New York Jets.

The Steelers wanted to replace starter Mike Adams during the game against the Minnesota Vikings, but a pectoral injury suffered by left guard Ramon Foster in the first half prevented that happening as Beachum was forced to take over at left guard in the second half.

Adams allowed 2.5 sacks against the Vikings to go along with two quarterback hits and a hurry.

  • Brandon Andrews

Ravens dealt multiple picks for Eugene Monroe? I know rebuilding just stings to see a rival bettering themselves.

  • george

Hopefully Beachum won’t be any worse than Adams. Now who will be the swing backup

  • Jason

Wish the Steelers would think outside the box to better themselves like the ravens did.

  • SteelersDepot

Monroe entered 2013 with a $5.747 M cap charge. No way the Steelers could trade for that and give up picks like the Ravens did.

  • Bell Cow

The Steelers can’t afford to give up any draft picks next year.

  • Christopher Wilkes

He’s not going to be much better, and then where are we going to be at?!?

  • Mike Carroll

Did Beachum play left tackle in college?

  • Shannon Stephenson

This is the about our only option. Not sure Beachum will be much better but some improvement is needed. Hope it works. Hopefully we can try Love out and see where he is at and if he has some talent look at bringing him on the roster.

  • gene mann

    Cap hell

  • Christopher Wilkes

They could try Gilbert at LT.

  • gene mann

Beachum at least played 4 Years @ LT in a pass happy Offense ate SMU

  • Mike Carroll

OK, 4 year starter at SMU.

    Let’s go Beach!

  • Nolrog

Multiple 3rd day picks is what I read. So nothing substantial.

  • CW

I know it’s probably not going to happen because he’s just gotten old and isn’t able to carry on anymore, but you about have to wonder if Max Starks might be able to still play left tackle for the Steelers. Starks seems to like Big Ben and seems to play good football when playing blind side protector for his fellow draft mate.

  • T R

obvoulsly you aint see Max Starks play late.. go back a story and see that lil gif over there >>>>>

  • Mike Carroll

  • CW

I have and I know it isn’t pretty, but I just have to wonder if it might matter who Starks is playing alongside.

  • Matt Manzo

What happens if Beachum sucks the 1st game at LT? Do we all say it’s ok cuz of growing pains? I’m tired of the coaching staffs revolving doors. At 0-4 why not let him play some more and see if he improves, then we’ll know. He’s young too and will have to go through growing pains as well.

  • Bell Cow

    Cap Hell + Talent Hell.

  • Jesse Leiker

Yeah, they are good friends I understand – but man…I don’t know if he has any juice left. I have been extra impressed with Beachum this season so far. Not as big and strong as you’d like, but he’s shifty, aggressive, and he hits his assignments every time. I’ll take a guy doing a 70% job at 100% assignments than a 100% job at 70% of the assignments. At least Beachum can “slow em down.” Adams just lets them through.

  • Mike Carroll

DeCastro and Gilbert both showed improvement over the first four weeks, but Adams did not. Unless Beachum sucks even worse than Adams in his first game, then I’d go ahead and let Beachum play a few more in a row to see if he can settle into the position. Sitting on the bench a few games might actually help Adams at this point.

  • Venkar

Adams has not been good, but I don’t understand why at minimum we don’t at least chip the rusher on his side. The play Adams was injured, where Beachum was schooled by Jared Allen, I think it was Haley’s fault for not calling a play where at least he got help.

  • Virdin Barzey

A dayworker at 7-11 is better than Adams. Hard for Beachum to be much worse.

  • Matt Manzo

I thought the same thing. Seemed like we should’ve had a back in there helping out more, that’s what I woulda done playin Madden!

  • Curtis

    4 & 7. I WOULD DO.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Gilbert is just starting to gel at right tackle, just hate to mix things up as the line is coming together although if that was our only real option I could see it but IMHO this is really the only thing that could be done quickly and cheaply.

  • Shannon Stephenson

  • Warren G

I do not think that it is possible for Beachum to be worse. Adams needs to be a guard. Way to slow to be a tackle.

  • Warren G

Adams is terrible at tackle. Beachum will be an upgrade.

  • Dan

Adams needs to be a groundskeeper. Even at guard you still need some quickness and decision making abilities.

  • Christopher Wilkes

What, from terrible to not so good?

  • Christopher Wilkes

I wish they’d give Gilbert a try at LT and send Adams back to RT. If that doesn’t work then go to the backups. I know Adams has been horrible as of late, but the coaching decisions have also been bad lately and the whole “turning over rocks” seems so damn random.

  • Christopher Wilkes

Just so you know, there’s an add for ‘Chicago Bears Pro Shop’ on this page that pops up. That’s kinda messed up.

  • Treina Steelerz-Qt Garris

There is another option…max starks became avaliable today. they could pick him up!

  • Xclewsive

I still believe Mike Adams is a worthy LT and just needs time to grow. I just believe Mike Adams has Duane Brown type of qualities and abilities. The Steelers have been productive even with Adams short comings. It’s funny how quickly the Steelers replaced Adams, but refuse to replace Ryan Clark who’s has more egregious acts as a center fielder and last line of defense. Ryan Clark has missed tackles since week 2 that has resulted in big gains or TDs. Its funny the Steelers are so quick to replace a young player with only a handful of games under his belt. But refuse to replace a veteran that is by far the biggest liability on defense.

  • r4kolb

I get Adams is bad but my question is this. I remember watching Gilbert, granted a different position, but I remember watching him as a rookie and saying the same thing about him. He was soft, a big marshmallow, slow. He kind of got better with time. Did anyone else think that Gilberts first years?

  • Jonas

There’s a reason every team releases him..

But if he really would help us, than our Tackles are even worse than I thought/think!

  • Jeff

You have to wonder: will we be able to afford Beachum’s next contract?

  • Jazz

Naw, I think I saw an opening in NYC, someone was looking for a guy to sell some Bleep on the corner. But that wouldn’t work, he would just smoke it all up.

  • Jazz

What? Did you actually watch the Game Dude? That kid looked as though he didn’t even belong. DL side-stepped clearly around him, left him standing their like a lost kid at Walmart crying and looking for his mommy. Hell No! He needs to go! Try him at another position, he is too slow, too ass weak too.

They should never have been swapped over in the first place!
Adams began to look pretty solid at RT last season, and whilst Gilbert had some issues last season, he was nowhere near as bad as Adams has looked this year!
Now we are promoting our number 1 back-up to starter, what happens if he gets injured? Whimper backing up inside, scary!
Giving up on mike now, and not letting him regain his place at RT is dangerous! But its the way Mike Rolls…. confidence crusher!

  • James Kling

This is a surprise, given the fact that we’ve drafted slow, weak tackles in Adams and Gilbert. Shocker. Serious.

  • steeltown

Good… lets see what he can do

  • treeher

Adams? Why not, no one else around.

  • GunsDontKillWoodleyKills

I think it has to do with the area you live in. Are you near Chicago? Because I get Ravens adds. I assume because I live in MD.

  • Xclewsive

Then you don’t know who Duane Brown is and the reason you didn’t understand my point. 2009 go back and watch the Steelers and Texans game then get back with me.

  • Luke Shabro

And maybe some tenacity and mental toughness. Adams is mentally soft

  • Luke Shabro

Ryan Clark has been great for years but it’s time for him to ride the pine pony. He’s given up a lot of plays this season and has broken most of the cardinal rules LeBeau has. At this point I feel like Golden or Shark are the better options. Good point

  • Xclewsive

Exactly! Adams biggest issue is inexperience, playing time and being ability to understand how teams/players are going to attack him. I believe it was Steelersdepot that said that the Steelers didn’t give Adams any help against Allen via chips blocks/additional blockers. So unless Adams has lost all confidence I don’t believe replacing him is going to fix the issue. Beachum isn’t a drive blocker at all. Beachum his a shadow blocker he’s not moving anybody off the LOS.

  • Matt Jones

So it’s Beachum or bust? 0-16 here we go Steelers here we go.

  • george

    Hopefully Adams can improve.

I think right now his head is spinning and he is to passive (always on the defensive).Lacks aggressiveness and punch.

    .Question is why?
    Lack of confidence?
    Afraid to commit?
Still thinking about his mistakes during past plays and not having his mind on the current play?
Not good at reading blitz schemes or?
    Poor film study?

    Anybody know?

  • Sabrina Minnehan

They should have kept Starks he is still better then what we are using and Ben has trust in him. Max makes this o-line better.BRING BACK MAX !!!!! For some reason he plays better for the steelers , I think he has a couple years left in him to help this line gel. They are going to get Ben killed if they don’t fix this fast !

  • PA2AK

We already tried Beachum at LT…he may actually be worse. I really like the guy, but he’s no answer. Switching Gilbert and Adams BACK to their original positions is the better move. Adams is clearly better on the right side. Gilbert seems average at either position. Remember they made that switch before they even played a real game.

  • PA2AK

I think we saw in the short rotation against the Bears that Beachum clearly isn’t better. Need to switch Gilbert and Adams back to their original positions. That move in the preseason had me scratching my head. Adams is much better on the right, while Gilbert is still average at left.

  • PA2AK

From what we have seen of Beachum at the LT position so far…definitely not an upgrade. I really like the guys work ethic, but he’s even worse than Adams.

  • W. Michael Koval

Adams needs to go to the practice squad until he can prove his worth or gotten rid of. Beachum would be a starter for most any team. Since The Steelers have always been frugal (i.e. tightwads) don’t expect them to pick up anyone needing to be paid anything. They would rather see the QB get killed. Dislocated index finger on throwing hand by defense jerking the hand and prying the fingers to get the ball away. We will see a lot more of it until we get an o-line that give the QB more than 2 seconds to throw the ball.

  • Soliciting Steelers

Listen to the fanbase and flip-the-tackles! flip-the-tackles! flip-the-tackles!!! Don’t waste our 6th man and arguably most important OL right now at LT…Jes#$ Chr!S^ Tomlin! 🙁

  • Soliciting Steelers

According to Jason La Canfora, the Steelers are looking to bring in a veteran offensive tackle to fix their protection issues.

Ravens aren’t the only team in AFC North moving for tackle help – Steelers and
Cards are hammering out a trade sending Levi Brown to PITT
    — Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) October 2, 2013

  • Samuel

Jake Matthews OT Texas A&M should be Steelers first round pick in 2014! Great technician, great footwork, and great pedigree as father was Bruce Matthews! He is not as big or strong as Taylor Lewan but he will not get beaten by edge rushers. As for Mike Adams, he clearly can’t play left tackle. He might be serviceable at right tackle!

  • Steeler Wheeler

“The Steelers wanted to replace Adams during the game”

My question is this…why did it take 3 and a half games for the Steelers to come to the conclusion that this guy sucks? And, what does this say about guy Whimper or anyone who got beat in training camp?

  • Janthony132

Steeler should gt Staris back and any other good and tough linemen

  • Arthur Branch

I am sure having Peppers and Allen use him like a swing door really helped Adam’s confidence. Tomlin is putting the kid out of his misery. I don’t think he has all his strength back from the stabbing in the off season.

  • Christopher Wilkes

    No, no where near Chicago.

  • Joe Longo

but his contract expires after this season..they will have to pay him or he walks.

  • Bilgewater D

And? Who doesn’t want to pay a very good LT? QB and LT are the most important positions.

  • Loosescrew

Yeah, i have never seen anything that SLOW and SLOWER, since DUMB AND DUMBER. Turtles cross the road here in Florida faster than Adams.. WHY DID COLBERT EVEN SELECT HIM IN THE DRAFT.. ( BECAUSE IT’S KEVIN COLBERT THAT SUCKS)!!!!!!!

  • Ed Charles

And yet more TERRIBLE draft choices by Colbert! Who does he have pictures of?

  • CrazyTerry

Exactly. If Whimper was deemed so bad (and it was no secret from the very beginning he was horrible) , why didnt they cut him before his salary was guaranteed? They would havbve beeen better off sucking it up, sign Starks with weight loss incentives and put Stasrks in that AZ program he underwent 2 years ago

  • CrazyTerry

They are frugal in the wrong ways. They are too generous to players like Brown, J Scott, E Sanders.

  • NO Hadiths

Adams and Gilbert are by Far the WORST.Not only Do neither need to Start, but Both Need to be Kicked OFF the Team..

  • pabandit

Agree with you on Urbik, he turned into quite a productive guard with the Bills, and the Steelers didn’t even give him the time they gave Adams to develop.

  • jake t

Adams has always played right side his whole career. They need to draft a top left tackle like taylor lewan and the way its looking they should have a high enough draft pick to go get him. Beach um has been solid all season wherever he’s played. He’s clearly worked very hard and deserves the opportunity. He’s not the answer long term but he’s earned the shot to try. He’s another doug legursky. They shouldn’t have let a good quality backup go but they’ve been making head scratching roster moves for the last three years. I never thought they should’ve let mewelde Moore go. He was great third down back (decent blocker, good pass catching hybrid running back that didn’t cost alot). Need to draft a left tackle tall stud reciever or move paulson opposite miller for four wide sets. That would give two extra big bodies to help in blocking and receiving. Haley needs to adapt his system for the personnel the Steelers have. Big Ben’s a vertical quarterback not the patrioitesque dink and dunk shit. The offense has steadily gotten better despite horrendous line play. Come guys get creative. P.s. will someone from coaching staff please go beg james farrior to come back so polamalu can stop trying to be a linebacker. He’s a safety, he should be in back fieldnot in the box.let him be the play maker that he is out there where an interception or two would surely help. No defensive turnovers means something obviously isn’t working. Also cortez “glass” Allen needs to step up or step out. Otherwise we’ll be drafting a corner to go along with left tackle!

  • Nick Kelly

It’s because Ramon Foster beat Urbik out. Foster impressed them that much
