Steelers Release RB Isaac Redman: Promote LB Kion Wilson From Practice Squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a roster move on Monday and it included them releasing running back Isaac Redman.

Redman, who was originally signed by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2009, had been inactive for the last three games after being demoted all the way down to the bottom of the depth chart.

Redman signed a $1.323 million restricted tender during the offseason and fell out of favor quickly after playing poorly in the season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

During his career in Pittsburgh, Redman rushed for 1,136 yards on 282 carries for five touchdowns in 47 regular-season games.

The Steelers filled Redman’s spot on the 53 man roster by promoting linebacker Kion Wilson from the practice squad.

Come to find out, Redman’s restricted tender contract was not guaranteed.

  • Dr. Doom

    He pissed someone off.

  • Mike Carroll

Good move using his roster spot on someone. They could always sign another RB off the street if injuries strike.

Could be, but more like…can’t play ST, don’t need him otherwise.

  • Eddy

    Was his contract guaranteed?

  • Frank Nitti

I hope Alan Baxter will take Wilsons PS spot

  • cencalsteeler

With Willams holding his own, I would have liked to see Wylie promoted for the return game. Hope they bring back Baxter now.

  • PA2AK

  • Yes, he was an RFA.

  • Probably both

  • SteelersDepot

  • cencalsteeler

What does Vegas have the odds set at Redman donning a Cardinal uniform in the near future?

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

A right move with a running back, finally!

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

    I have this 5 to 1! Haha

  • Shea Fahr

One of the things I love about our (informed) Fan Base is that we actually root for who to bring back to our Practice Squad…Every NFL Fan Base would be better served if they did the same. I like Baxter and we could use an OLB on the PS right about now. If Red’s Tender is not guaranteed, it is even Better… Go Steelers!

  • Dr. Doom

    I give it 10-1

  • Ken

Can we call up players from our cardinal farm team? I think Larry Fitz is ready for backup roll here.

  • Ken

I always liked Issac, he about single handedly beat the Ravens last year in Baltimore lest we forget. I appreciated him, but he certainly didn’t seem to have any spark this year.

  • CW

Shame. He really lost something along the way.

But cutting all that contract space really is the only option at some point.

  • T R

is running back Alexader still on PS? do we have any RB on PS anymore?

  • Shelob9

Why promote Wilson? Did someone try and sign him or is there an injury to a LB we don’t know about?

  • Eric

Good business move, but how did he go from opening day starter, to co starter with Bell on the depth chart to released? What were the coaches thinking then?

  • Jefferson_St_Joe

I thought he was vested. Since he wasn’t, they should have cut him as soon as Bell was ready.

  • T R

why they aint wait till after the trade deadline in a week.. we might got a last minute sucka to low ball Redman with.. Dang…

  • Mike Carroll

You mean the game Charlie Batch threw for 276 yards and brought the team from behind to win in his last start in a fine backup QB career in Pittsburgh? Redman did not do much in that one.

  • Mike Carroll

Not sure why, but I thought the same thing. Agree, they should have cut him a couple of weeks ago, but I guess they might have wanted to make sure Bell’s foot was fully healed. Either way, I’m glad they cleared a little bit of cap money by cutting him.

  • Ken

You are correct my apologies. I was thinking of the Giant game last year in New York. Steelers won 24-20 Issac had 147 yards.

  • Mike Carroll

Cleared some cap space as well.

  • daddeeekip

Now they need to resign Alan Baxter to PS

  • CrazyTerry

What a pity. he was one of my favorite Steeelers. Too bad, he lost it in recent months and hasn’t been the same player he used to be. He seemed very clutch at one time. But since his salary is not guaranteed, this is a move they had to make.

  • 20Stoney

There have been some curious moves with the depth chart to be sure.

  • Shannon Stephenson

It is funny how fast things moved from Dwyer being the bad guy and Redman was the epitome of how to act to now Redman being released. It can be confusing wondering exactly what is going on behind closed doors if anything.

  • Bob Graff

Is this team finally waking up ?? Cut the fat keep the hungry young players hungrier. What took so long? Now that there is a little bit of MO going great time to do it. Who should be looking over there shoulder? Mike Adams and anyone one or two of four te’s. This roster needs some balance.

  • Scotty

You are thinking of the Raven game years ago when he caught the ten yard TD pass and bowled through the defense. He was a good kid but he just didn’t have it anymore.

  • steeltown

    Yea, Alexander is still there

  • steeltown

I figured this was his last season regardless. He’ll be 29yrs old next month and I didn’t think they’d be re-signing him to a multi-yr deal at that age after this season, especially considering he is not a feature back and he doesn’t play special teams

    Thanks for the memories Red

  • steeltown

Indeed… Worilds and Sly aren’t signed past this season and Carter doesn’t seem like a long term guy. Would be nice to have the young Baxter back

  • Eric

Best wishes Issac. Send a resume to the NY Giants.

  • MC

This was expected. Dwyer and Jones have been more productive this season and Redman has looked hesitant and slower.

Dwyer can also pick up the blitz well which really makes Redman expendable.

I really like our stable of backs going forward. I wish Redman the best though.

  • Christopher Wilkes

    Nobody’s that dumb.

  • Christopher Wilkes

Funny this guy was our starter. The handling of Redman/Dwyer has been a joke from the start. Glad to see things finally settled the way most had seen it would. Curious to find out his salary was not guaranteed. I thought this site suggested it was.

  • gene mann

Yes we all forget what Redman did for the steelers in the past but guess it more like what have you done for me lately.I doubt you see Wtlie brought up at this point. I will be shocked if thye don;t add another TE or WR to the PS instead of an olb like baxter

  • Joey

Agreed, I think Dwyer is the reason they decided to ultimately cut him. Dwyer plays ST as well as throws great blocks for Ben.

  • Eric

AZ is not a farm team. Its more like a pasture where old Steelers get put.

  • William Bigelow

    Me too ….

  • Douglas Andrews

Figured Redman was on his way out that was alot of money inactive on Sundays!

  • Virdin Barzey

Redman could have been a great story but this is the correct move IMO. Redman looked awful this year. He was and never will be a starter in this league. He just doesn’t have the full tools. He’s too slow and recently started fumbling the ball. His best trait was Redzone Redman make tough yards for short gains. He wasn’t making those either.

  • Steeler Goetz

What does signing Wilson from the PS say about Sean Spence?

  • Chad H

For a UFA he worked hard and gave us some good games for cheap. Love guys like this. Thank you Redman for your attitude and work ethic.
    Now bring back Baxter please.

I really don’t think they ever saw Redman as a 20 carry type RB…I think when they decided to let M’Hall go, they thought Dwyer could be the every down guy, Redman the short yardage guy, and find some snaps for LSH or another change of pace RB.

Dud…total dud running game. Everybody was beating up on the OL, and they put LSH, and F. Jones back there…same OL and these guys were near 4 ypc…Oh…ok the OL needs to work on pass protection, but they’re not that bad.

Redman simply doesn’t have the foot speed to get to the hole. Glad he got his shot, and maybe he’ll get another.

  • Mike Popovich

This was a move that needed to have been made 8 weeks ago.

  • steepens

Keeping Dwyer over Redman is the right move IMO. Hope LB and FJ stay healthy so we don’t have to call Redman back. But still, can’t help but like big Red because he came in undrafted and had some good games. I wish him the best. Would be funny if Pittsburgh West or Indy picked him up now 8).
