Steelers Might Have To Promote DE Brian Arnfelt From The Practice Squad On Saturday

With Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel already ruled out for the Sunday game against the Miami Dolphins with a foot injury, and nose tackle Steve McLendon likely to miss a second consecutive game with an ankle injury, that leaves only four healthy defensive linemen on the 53 man roster. As a result, the Steelers might be forced to promote rookie undrafted free agent Brian Arnfelt from the practice squad on Saturday and dress him for the game on Sunday.

Arnfelt, who appeared in 37 career games during his career at Northwestern, played 146 snaps during the preseason with most of them coming at the right defensive end spot. He registered eight total tackles during late action in four games and generally represented himself well, especially against the run.

The Steelers normally like to dress at least five defensive linemen for games, so this is definitely something to be on the lookout for come Saturday. In order to promote Arnfelt to the 53 man roster, a player would have to be waived in order to make room for him. That player could very well wind up being either linebacker Kion Wilson or cornerback Isaiah Green.

Bring him up and put Kiesel on IR. Let’s find out what he’s got

  • Steve

It is time Arfelt was given his chance. We will see how he does.

  • HopalongCassidy

I thought he should have been on the 53 man roster to begin with.

  • SteelersDepot

I should note, even if he is promoted, I wouldn’t expect him to see playing time unless an injury occurs.

might be wilson seems he lost his spot.

Will be interesting to see what they do at DE over the offseason. I honestly think Kiesel has another good year in him if he stays healthy.
Hood could be retained as he hasn’t shown enough to have other teams kicking his door down.
Hewyard will be a franchise DE.
Hopefully Arnfelt does enough so they don’t need to spend another high draft pick on a DE as they’ll need to use whatever they can on the secondary.

I think between the emergence of Cam Heyward, the steady play of Al Woods, the versatility of McLendon and the hopeful development of the young guys Arnfelt and N.Williams we may not need to retain Hood, the money that would be used to re-sign him could be used elsewhere to help sign someone like Worilds, but who knows the coaching staff really like Ziggy so maybe he comes back on a modest deal. I would think him being passed on the depth chart this late in his career/development is not a good sign

“Ziggy Hood” and “career development” in the same sentence made me queasy.

I truly believe Arnfelt will be a great Steeler! I don;t care that those great plays he made were against 2nd and 3rd stringers. He shows tremendously strength and determination. He will not give a damn if he is playing against the best the NFL has to offer. He will grind it out, hold his own and make some great plays. I want to see him play a little. Please throw him in the mix.

    This isn’t Saturday football.

  • srdan

I’ve never seen him play, but you go me excited.

  • steeltown

He did actually have a really good preseason, albeit against 2nd stringers, but he showed great quickness and awareness for such a young player. I think he was one of the highest prized undrafted players out there

I think Alan Baxter should be signed to the practice squad if Brian Arnfelt is upgraded to the active roster
