Steelers Still Mathematically Alive For The Playoffs Heading Into Week 17

The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Green Bay Packers 38-31 Sunday at Lambeau Field and thanks to several other games going their way, they are still mathematically alive for the final AFC Wild Card spot.

Prior to the Steelers game getting underway, the Buffalo Bills beat the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets beat the Cleveland Browns. In the late games, the New England Patriots easily took care of the Baltimore Ravens.

In order for the Steelers to make the playoffs in the final week of the regular season, they must beat the Browns and hope that the Ravens, Dolphins and San Diego Chargers all lose.

The Ravens will play the Cincinnati Bengals, who clinched the AFC North on Sunday. The Dolphins play Jets while the Chargers play the Kansas City Chiefs.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Elijah Stevenson

All we can do is pray and best Cleveland next week

  • Josh Gustad

So if we win and Ravens, Chargers, and Dolphins lose we are guaranteed in?

  • DrakePirate

parlay odds would put us around 10/1 but i think realistically our odds are a little better at 20% which is not bad at all !

  • Lamarr56

Good, this will keep our guys motivated and amped for this game!

  • Kevin Gobleck

    Yep

  • Elijah Stevenson

The only problem is we need three teams in a row to lose beating the browns ain’t the problem.

  • Elijah Stevenson

    Yes sir

  • Josh Gustad

This might be a stupid question…how would that work with the Dolphins beating us and also having an 8-8 record?

  • Don

only trap I see is a KC team going to SD that really has nothing to play for as far as seeding goes..however, with them on a losing streak as of late that could keep the starters in…

  • HopalongCassidy

When you get to this point, now you contemplate all of the wouldas, shouldas and couldas.

  • Busforever

    It is possible.

  • r4kolb

The tiebreaker breakdown would eliminate them before it would come to the head to head with the Steelers.

  • r4kolb

Therein lies the adage “you never want to depend on another team to win for you”. Unfortunately they put themselves in this position by losing games they had no business losing. Titans, Vikings, Raiders, Dolphins.

  • Jones

We beat the Jets, the Jets will have beaten Miami in that scenario, so we win the tie breaker over Phins.

  • HopalongCassidy

It takes into account a lot of tie breakers if all of these teams end up tied at 8-8 including the Jets.

  • Kevin Gobleck

Pretty much what everyone else is saying we will own the lot of tie breakers

  • T R

no we don’t win the tie breaker over Miami.. the Jets eliminates Miami if they are 8-8 first.. then we eliminate the jets on our tiebreak over them.. divisional tiebreaker are done first then conference tiebreakers. So Miami is not in the equation by the time they factor in the steelers. :). thats why the jets have to be 8-8 to eliminate miami.. if jets lose them Miami will eliminate us..

  • RW

    Same story as last year…

  • Jim Underwood

Tiebreakers are determined divisionally first, then conference. The Jets would win the tiebreaker over Miami then we hold it over the Jets. Hypothetically, if Miami held the tiebreaker over the Jets then Miami would hold the tiebreaker over us..

  • Aric Brown

the only one that would be an upset is miami losing

  • Riverstko

    Miracle Season?

  • r4kolb

And may well be the story many more times as long as Tomlins at the helm!

  • r4kolb

You mean the Miami that just got shutout by the powerhouse Bills?

  • wadexyz

Rooting for the Steelers, but is Mike Tomlin like the worst coach in the NFL or what? What’s up with the play calling today ?

  • Jones

Ah – thanks for the clarification.

  • Jones

And what exactly makes you think Tomlin was calling all the plays? In case you missed it, Haley & Ben might have called just a few today.

What part of the 38 points put up leads you to believe that the play calling was all that bad for that matter?

  • Eric Crook

Just keep the faith!!!! Every match-up is a possibility to go in our favor…like I said before, it’s the NFL, anything can happen. Definitely proud of the team for fighting back this hard to at least have the shot. The offense seems to have found its groove

  • Anthony Renzelli

How about his clock management and decision not to kneel and kick the FG? Now there’s a problem

  • Shannon Stephenson

The game that worries me the most is the Dolphins/Jets but the jets can win it.

  • Eric Crook

Division games are always tyough, thats why I was telling people the Bills could pull it out, I feel the same for the jets…you don’t think the Jets wanna knock the Dolphins out of the playoffs…thats a bet I’d take any day……just like bet your ass that Cleveland wants to end our season as well!

  • Eric Crook

the Chargers are the team that worries me the most…KC’S defense looked as bit shabby today…hope they step it up next week

  • Don

The Miami team that has Jekyll-and-Hyded all year long (actually there were a lot more of those than usual this year). Who knows what to expect from them?

  • Anthony Hodge

How about running it down and the field goal is…
    A) missed..B)blocked just like the one that was blocked earlier with refs giving GB the ball. Now it’s OT and a GB run back is possible. Their KR almost ran one back earlier.

  • Anthony Renzelli

nice defense of a bonehead call bud. If teams worried every field goal they kicked from 25 yards out would be blocked, maybe they should just eliminate the field goal from football?

  • Anthony Hodge

Your ‘opinion’ that I’m defending a boneheaded play is just that…an ‘opinion’. I think it was a good call and I’ll stay with it bud. If the Steelers FG was blocked because of the conditions, all the ”PC COACHES’ would’ve still complained.Last time I checked..the Steelers WON.

  • Anthony Renzelli

Your one of those guys that defends Tomlin no matter what. It’s okay, I understand. It is kind of weird though that 95% of the people that have spoken about this disagree with you and agree with my “opinion”. Hey they did win though

  • Anthony Hodge

Yes you’re right…I am one of “those guys” that defend Tomlin. Just like I defended Cohwer and Noll when they coached the Steelers. I’ve been a fan since 1970 and it’s so funny that anything Tomlin does that your 95% don’t agree with, then he’s the worst coach, should be fired and blah, blah, blah. They might not be on this site but I know plenty of fans that would take Tomlin over their coaches anyday. Although some people have a short memory/or were not born yet on the last two that coached, they had plenty of blunders but they get a pass because of some reason. There are plenty of times that I don’t like what happens in a game but other coaches with “rings” are given a pass. Hey ya don’t have to like my comments but I’ll support Tomlin just like the other two Steeler greats. As I said before,Steelers won…
