Report: Mike Munchak To Be Steelers New Offensive Line Coach

According to a Wednesday report on Twitter by John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak will be the Pittsburgh Steelers new offensive line coach.

Munchak interviewed with the Steelers late last week and was reportedly trying to decide between them and the Houston Texans.

Munchak grew up in Scranton, PA as a Steelers fan and played his college football at Penn State.

Munchak became the Tennessee offensive line coach in 1997 and held that position for 14 years (1997-2010) before becoming their head coach in 2011. Four of his players totaled 10 Pro Bowl invitations and his offensive lines have paved the way for five different running backs to total an NFL-high 12 1,000-yard rushing seasons from 1997-2010.

This is obviously a huge get for the Steelers and Munchak will be responsible for getting tackles Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert to start playing like second-round draft picks. In addition, young players such as David DeCastro, Kelvin Beachum and Maurkice Pouncey will most certainly benefit from his arrival.

The hiring of Munchak now means that the Steelers have three former head coaches on their staff as defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau and offensive coordinator Todd Haley are also former head coaches.

    I hope this is true…..

  • MailboxKid

    Can you say, “WINNER”?
Even if he ends up being mediocre or even bad, you can’t say it was a bad hire.

  • Douglas Andrews

Good hire if it’s accurate. We need a good teacher for our young O lineman. Hope he can bring out the best in those guys.

  • Lamarr56

Great, great hire. He is absolutely great with O-Line and he will turn our guys around. Absolutely ecstatic!

  • Michael Pearce

He would be a huge addition to the Steelers coaching staff.

  • Kevin Gobleck

God please let this be reported by anyone except Rappaport

  • T R

This on paper looks great.. lets take it to the classroom and field baby… Lets go Steelers..if run game fails this time its personell

  • WilliamSekinger

OMG omg omg omg … No excuses anymore. The Steelers have an all star coaching staff. Both Corordinators were head coaches, O-line coach was a head coach, RB and LB coaches on other teams radar for OC positions. Steelers better make waves next season.

  • T R

Must be true to form cause Ian Rap ain’t reported yet.. So we got our man… LOL

  • Iron Cadet

Woooo! This is exactly what we needed and now there are no more excuses. Put up or shit up for the o line. Maybe just maybe everyone will stay healthy

  • LayDownTheHammer

Thank the Lord. I hated Jack Bicknell Jr’s dumb shenanigans the moment he got here amidst everyone singing his praises.

Dare I say that if Haley were to “lose his footing” that he would be the next man up to scale the mountain?

  • Mike Carroll

Great hire! Kudos to Tomlin and company for making this happen.

  • JT

    Fonzi be praised!!!!

  • Matt Manzo

This might be the 1st time everybody agrees on a Steelers decision?! I haven’t read any negative comments yet!

  • Jacob Dixon

    Best hire in a while

  • StrengthOfVictory

The perfect bit of news when the only football on this week is the Pro Bowl.

  • Donny Simmons

He should be a great help to our young lineman! Now let’s draft 2 cb’s my hope is Gilbert or Denard in the first. Allen Robinson in the 2nd ( I know wr)& Kyle Fuller in the 3rd with the comp pick.

  • dkoy85

    Giddie like a school girl

  • Brian Tollini

Excellent news. If I wasn’t so cold I would be more excited.

  • Dwayne Ferguson

I think this is huge. Such a exciting development. Only good things can come from this hire.

  • gene mann

If this is true then it a great signing

  • gene mann

No Frills Coach who knows how to get it done. I hope he can teach Adams how to play LT

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

I know this is football but i im thinking with all fan replies about this hire that we hit a homerun but do anybody know if he uses the zone blocking scheme that we were trying to work on this yr before the injuries

  • Rubem Dornas

    Thank God!

  • chris ward

Outstanding hire by the Steelers. Munchak has great knowledge in coaching O-line play in the NFL and has great experience after having a HOF career at Guard for 12 years. Good start to the off-season, for the Steelers to add Munchak to the coaching staff, really looking forward to seeing the Steelers O-line develop with Munchak.

  • CrazyTerry

The focus is on Colbert now. Damn good coaching hire. If the OL still sucks even in two years, it is all on the front office. So happy about this hire.

  • David Edward

I’ll keep the string of approvals going…great hire! Wonder how good he’s at clock management? Lol

  • Steve

Let just hope Munchak get’s along with Tomlin and don’t get fired mid season.

  • Bill Molinaro

  • GoSteelerz

I know one guy who will appreciate this hire… Le’Veon Bell!!!! Can’t wait to see our running game dominate!!!! 😀

  • dgh57

This is a GREAT HIRE as I thought maybe being home grown would prove to be to powerful of a force to resist for him. He has a chance to really build up his resume if he stays around long enough to improve both Adams and Gilberts play!(to dare I say it Pro Bowl status!)

  • Kirby Hogenmiller

    It is.

  • cencalsteeler

    Winner, Winner,…..Chicken dinner!!!!!

  • Luke Shabro

Damn I’m excited! If there’s a guy that can salvage Mike Adams and/or elevate Kelvin Beachum it’s Mike Munchak! So awesome

  • TheBurgh805

    Woo woo

  • RyanW

Yes he does use the zone blocking scheme

  • RyanW

Very excited for this hire I said it the second he was let go by Tenn that we should hire him

  • Chris92021

    Oh happy day!!

  • gene mann

    great news great hire

  • gene mann

we see what he can do for Adams

  • blackandgoldBullion

Wow! Once in a while wishes come true. If he can’t get them to be an amazing unit, no one can. At least with Munchack we will soon find out which of these young guys really belong. Fantastic!

  • Kenneth Wilt

    Huge WIN!!

  • Brandon James

What a great signing. This could be the turning point for a dominate offensive line for years to come

  • Madi

Ha, true. If Munchak turns in his worst coaching performance ever, it’ll be a step up.

  • Jazz

Great Hire! I agree, no more excuses for sorry ass Gilbert or Adams. If they can’t make it happen in 2014, time to move on. Especially Gilbert, too often he has gotten pushed backed into the backfield.

  • RMSteeler

Awe. Some. I’m in! Some! Awe!

  • Rod Hedrick

Great Hire. Lets hope he can get these guys to be motivated to open holes and Keep Ben Safe.

  • Avril111

Aunty Julia got silver Volkswagen Beetle Convertible by working parttime off of

  • Shannon Stephenson

This maybe the most valuable pick up of the year if he can teach these young guys!

  • steeltown

  • Jason White

Awesome hire. I wonder if hiring Munchak will provide more incentive for Fernando Velasco to resign. I mean he is coming hack from injury and probably wont have teams lining up to sign him.

  • Lucus Rodriguez

    does he coach defense?

  • Ronk25

Your headline read Offensive Coordinator – I got super excited. But, when I got to the article it read offensive line coach. Munchak will do fine in that role. Now, if the Steelers could only get a half descent offensive coordinator things would start looking up. It;s a pretty sad state of affairs when anyone can say that what saved the offensive coordinator’s (Halwey’s) job is he stopped calling plays & turned that task over to someone else = Ben.

  • Jazz

Where the hell did that come from?

  • Jason White

Ben has been given playcalling responsibilities under Arians and it didn’t always produce results and it certainly didn’t prevent sacks/injuries to Ben. Ben may have the ability to use the no huddle but keep in mind its still HALEY’S system. Ben has embraced HALEY’S system and its HALEY’S system that protects Ben. I’m sorry but 7 sacks in the last 7 games I believe it was is absolutely amazing when you consider the O-line and the injuries they faced. Playcalling and HALEY’S system was greatly responsible for the lack of sacks and increased productivity down the stretch. The offense has plenty to build off of in 2014 while the defense is the unit that needs some reworking. As long as the offense moves in the direction it was moving in to end the season Todd Haley’s job is safe.

  • Andrew Mechem

If John McClain says it, it must be true. Yippiekiyay Mutha F*cker. Great move!

  • Steve

Apparently Bicknell was cut off mid season and you see what happen to him.

  • RyanW

He had his responsibilities reduced cause he sucked. They let an assistant take over and he turned them around
