Steelers Likely To Retain Omar Khan For Another Year As Dolphins GM Search Has Ended

The Miami Dolphins have announced that they’ve hired Tampa Bay Buccaneers director of player personnel Dennis Hickey as their next general manager and that means that Pittsburgh Steelers Director of Football Administration Omar Khan will likely have to wait at least another year before he becomes a general manager.

Khan has now been considered for a few general manager openings across the league over the course of the last few years, but for one reason or another he hasn’t landed one. You would think that Khan’s knowledge of the business side of things would be attractive to other organizations, but so far that hasn’t been the case.

Khan will turn 37 in February, so his football front office career is far from being over. He will continue to get interviews as other general manager positions open up moving forward and it’s only a matter of time before he lands one.

For now, Khan will continue to manage the salary cap and negotiate contracts for the Steelers while Samir Suleiman, his heir apparent, continues to assist him.

Wow. Only 37? Seems like he’s been around forever.

I realize its not Khans fault but teams may be turned off by the Steelers restructuring nightmare.

  • JohnB

Good. We’re gonna need the wrath of Khan this offseason.

If I’m a team looking for a GM, I’d be more interested in a guy with a scouting/player development background.

  • SwagDaddy330

Huh? Khan doesn’t offer the deals, Colbert does.

Khan is a good money guy, that’s why teams want to talk to him. My guess is that he isn’t a football guy yet and that’s why teams are turned off.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Its only a matter of time before Khan gets a GM job

  • William Bigelow

    Khaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnn !!!

  • CrazyTerry

WHat exactly does Khan bring to the table as a GM? You need a football guy first. How freaking tough is it to manage a cap? I am amazed at how many football people treat it like some of tough math. It’s not like he has been an asset in advising Colbert in how not to restructure so many players and keep pushing cap dollars to the future.

  • CrazyTerry

So what the hell does Khan do??? Is he just a glorified financial planner/accountant for the team? A GM with afootball background can always hire a good money guy to work out details related to the cap.

  • SwagDaddy330

I think you answered your own question.

  • walter mason

Like I said I realize its not Khans fault.

  • walter mason

And maybe thats why he was not hired again.

  • walter mason

Not long ago he was praised on this forum as being a genius. Now we are suffering the consequences of too much restructuring. Again I realize this is not his fault. But I would also like to know what he has to offer other than crunching numbers.

  • walter mason

oh please stop the massive restructuring.
