Steelers Sign RB Miguel Maysonet, WR Lanear Sampson To Future Contracts

The Pittsburgh Steelers have now added two more players to their offseason roster as running back Miguel Maysonet and wide receiver Lanear Sampson were both signed to future contracts on Tuesday.

Maysonet  was originally signed by the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent in 2013 out of Stony Brook but was released in May. During the 2013 season, he spent time on the practice squads of the Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers and New York Jets.

Sampson was originally signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2013 out of Baylor where he totaled 165 catches for 1,905 yards and 11 touchdowns as a four year starter. In 2013 he spent time on the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys.

all these great signings, we might not need a draft. LOL

  • Matt Manzo

Maysonet was a favorite of a lot of us last draft! I can’t remember who it was, but someone pointed him out a s a small school back that could impress!

Jesus. Can we sign some TE’s who don’t suck to futures contracts?

  • SumnerYoung

I’m diggin’ the Lanear Sampson signing (BTW, Lanear Sampson sounds like an old-school basketball player from the 70′s; I pictured him with multi-colored tube socks, short shorts and a big ass afro). This guy played receiver alongside some big time talent while at Baylor: Terrance Williams (stud), Kendall Wright (stud), Josh Gordon (stud). Sampson was still a productive receiver even though passes weren’t always coming his way.

More good futures signings here. Maysonet isn’t a speed guy (4.6 forty), but he has some all-purpose skills and is KR capable. That puts him in the mix for the #3 RB competition. Sampson is 5’11 and isn’t really a KR, but he has 4.4 speed.

Sampson can block – Mann is gonna love him.

In the footage provided, I was not impressed with Maysonet, he didn’t seem to be able to create much if the play broke down. Blocking is vital to a successful running game, but the runner also needs to be able to make a guy miss every now and then, or hit a cut back lane when the opportunity presents itself. I was much more impressed with Sampson, he seems to be able to do the little things well, the things that make a difference over the course of a game. He blocks, has a knack for getting open, and can catch under duress. He looks good int he screen/short passing game, which we utilize quite a bit.

I came away with the same impressions as you.

Maysonet was projected to be the late round steal of the draft by Todd McShay, obviously that hasn’t worked out to this point because he was an UDFA and hasn’t been able to stick but…FYI

  • Nolrog

Does anything every happen with these guys? Do they ever go on to have a solid NFL career?

  • GoSteelerz

Donnie Shell was an undrafted rookie free agent… He turned out just fine!!!! Should be in the Hall of Fame in my opinion… James Harrison wasn’t drafted either, and he bounced around on practice squads and such. He became Defensive Player of the Year in 2008!!!!! So yes, these guys will surprise you every now and then!

Besides the players already mentioned currently we have Ryan Clark, Ramon Foster and McLendon, all starters, all undrafted

    Hell Warren Moon went undrafted

  • steeltown

These are nice signings… Maysonet was highly productive in college and Sampson is a damn good athlete… could always just be training camp fodder, but man you never know someone like Maysonet could end up being a contributor

  • James Kling

He’s 5’9″, 209#. There are plenty of backs his size who are in the league. His biggest problem was likely the jump from FCS competition to the bigs.

  • James Kling

Yep, Maysonet runs hard. He rolled over Nova in the FCS title game a year ago, I like his style.

  • Ahmad

Wow I’m really impressed with Sampson. He looked good running those bubble screens so he should fit right in.
