Poll: Rank The Steelers 2014 Draft Needs By Position

I have been playing around with some poll widgets to use at some point on the site and figured I would throw one up this evening to test. In this poll, you have the ability to rank the Pittsburgh Steelers 2014 draft needs by position. To do so, simply drag each position into the order that you want them from most needed to least. When you are happy with the order, click next and then submit. I have it set to run for a week and ask that you only vote once.

Feel free to post your order in the comments below.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Kevin Gobleck

    Where is WR at?

  • SteelersDepot

Crap. I left off WR. Let me do this again.

  • SteelersDepot

If you have already voted, please vote again as I had to create another poll due to leaving off the WR position in the first one.

  • William Weaver

Very cool technology but the submit button isn’t showing up on iPhone. Just me or all smart phones?

  • SteelersDepot

I haven’t checked it. Like I said, I am just playing with a few of these to see their limitations.

  • William Weaver

Not complaining, just letting you know. I will get on computer and post my vote. We will have to do this vote again after free a fancy and see how it all changes. Thanks!

  • William Weaver

    Free agency.. Lol

  • Callentown

    Nice little tool!

  • LayDownTheHammer

There’s no absolute order, but I will rank as tiers:

    1) NT, CB, OT – starters this year aren’t cutting it in light of how important of a position this is.
    2) OLB, S – the starters this year can hold things up for ~ 1 more year but the necessity is still very much present
    3) TE, ILB – the starters this year may/may not be long-term answers; still-needed depth picks

Note that WR is absolutely NOT on this list (see my other posts by clicking on my name).

Also note that I do not take into account how strong/deep of a position class this is this year, nor where the xth rated position player would be available in the yth round.

  • Matt Manzo

Same for my iPhone but I switched it to desktop view and it worked fine.

  • TheBurgh805

    just iphones

  • SteelersDepot

Yes, we will do it again a few more times along the way.

  • Addison

I truley believe if the steelers bring the constant pressure and stop the run everything else will fall into place. Inside, outside linebackers and DE’s. Cornerbacks 3-6 round

  • mlc43

I went CB, OLB, NT, ILB, Safety, WR, TE, DE, T, G, C, RB, QB.
This is how I see the team needs, not the draft. The draft will be determined by who is available.
OLB and NT are almost interchangeable to me. I gave WR a nod over TE because it may be more of an immediate need, though long term we need a replacement for Heath.

  • Iron Cadet

Yes it is. I just did it from my iphone

  • Iron Cadet

What do the numbers in the results mean? Sorry just a tad confused cuz cornerback had a low number and qb was like 12.

  • SteelersDepot

average rank. In other words, the lower the number, the high the priority voters think that position is.

  • JohnB

I like this cause it really help me prioritize:
    1. ILB is our main need cause other than Timmons we have jack. we don’t NEED CB in the first rd cause we have 3 adequate starters. Safety is another pick I would have but I wouldn’t have it this high.
    2. I feel comfortable enough with our Oline that all positions are at the bottom but I say that with caution because I don’t like our injury history.
    3. other than one being tall there really isn’t a reason to pick a WR in the early rounds.
    4. DT should be late cause they were used in less plays last year, im not sure if that was because of talent but if that’s how we move forward, we don’t need an early pick on DT.
5.OLB should be addressed early and they should bring in a lot of UFAs cause I don’t see much I like with what we currently have. outside the starters of course.

  • William Weaver

Thanks! I went back n checked again after your comment and I was able to vote too.

  • Aric Brown

I’m surprised at how low OLB was ranked… if Worilds leaves in FA we basically have zero (healthy) starting caliber OLBs… Even if Worilds stays he’s not exactly MR. Ironman

  • Aric Brown

My list almost mirrored yours…. I had Tackle ahead of safety though

  • mlc43

That really surprised me as well.

  • mlc43

I can see the want of a true T. I was wanting to give it ONE more year to see after how they finished out the season.

  • Addison

Inside linebacker, outside linebacker, corners, DE, Wide receiver, safety, TE, then the rest the O line and QB last. Doesn’t to be that draft round order. If Allen Robinson is staring us in the face 2nd round I take in the home state kid.

  • Kenneth Wilt

Wrong. I would say we either are going to keep Woodley or Worilds. Jones, while not great this year, will only get better. Look at Joey Porter, you know that guy we just brought back. His first year…..16 games,10 tackles, 2 sacks. Jones….14 games, 40 tackles, 1 sack. It wasn’t until Joey’s 3rd year that he stepped up and really things.

  • Iron Cadet

Oh sweet. then i had the average place for each of my picks because they all went in increasing order

  • PTownSteelTown

I’m of the mind we should keep both Woodley and Worilds. Even assuming the best case scenario regarding Jones, that would still leave us without any depth. Drafting an OLB would mean nothing for this year. Imo, we have to keep all three unless one of the perenial special teamers/practice squad olb’s seriously step up.

  • SteelerFanInMD

I don’t see the “next” and “submit” buttons.

  • Shannon Stephenson

We have Woodley and Jones. Woodley is a All Pro caliber OLB when healthy.

  • Bill Sechrengost

I think that is a great point Aric. As bad as the depth is at other positions, this might be the worst. When you look at their roster, they could use a lot more draft picks to give themselves depth. We’ll have to wait to see how many of their free agent running backs, defensive lineman, and others come back to really see how bad the need is at each position. It also depends on health of Sean Spence and then they have an aging group of players such as Troy and Heath who will not be here much longer. Every draft pick will be important this year. It’s time for Colbert and Tomlin to step up. There have been too many mistakes made in the past with the draft and everyone is accountable.

  • Shannon Stephenson

I do not think CB is as big of a need as people see it. We have three guys that play at a good level. Ike does need to have a replacement in tack but Gay, Allen and Taylor will be adequate for this year.

  • CW

Personally I am hoping the Steelers trade back in the first at least once with the Cardinals to add another third round pick and maybe trade back again with the Panthers depending on where Calvin Pryor out of Louisville is looking like he’d go in the draft.

Replacing Ryan Clark is paramount this offseason and Pryor looks like the ideal guy for that position. Adding one or two draft picks would also help greatly in the middle rounds since the Steelers need to find a good number of new players at key positions both offensively and defensively.

  • Aric Brown

I don’t think Woodley is an All-Pro caliber OLB….. He’s done nothing since losing a real All-Pro caliber OLB from the other side… I look at Woodley sort of the same way I look at Flacco… Anquan Boldin is responsible for the larger part of Joe Flaccos contract, as James Harrison is responsible for the large part of Woodleys contract

  • Aric Brown

We don’t know that Jones is going to be great… we hope.. for every Joey Porter there are 3 Chris Carters

  • Jefferson_St_Joe

I voted OLB as top priority, although there are several positions of equal need. To me, OLB is the most important position on this defense. That position has to produce ‘splash’ plays. Jones is still a question mark to me. Who knows if Worilds and Woodley will play for what they are worth?

  • blackandgoldBullion

Absolutely. I have been saying that years from now we will look back and realize that Harrison was a monster.

  • blackandgoldBullion

Same here. I can move stuff around, but no way to submit. It must be something with our computers. Anybody have any ideas?

  • blackandgoldBullion

My sentiments exactly. If you trade down, you might decide that Ebron in the later part of the first round is worth it. You might choose Pryor or my first choice, a CB. Plus you get another pick later.

  • SteelerFanInMD

I can see the buttons when I use Google Chrome, but not when I use Internet Explorer.

  • John

Trading down makes huge sense. We need several players and have depth needs at many positions. If we could trade down to 24 and still get a stud WR or corner, that would make tremendous sense. If we re-sign Worilds, we do not need any OLB. If we do not, then OLB becomes a strong depth need. If Spence is gone (and Colbert seems pessimistic), ILB is a bigger need also. But the secondary and one WR are the biggest needs I think.

  • Kenneth Wilt

I’m not saying we don’t need an OLB, but I think the argument can be made that we at least have our starters covered. The same cannot be said at CB and S at the moment.

  • Superdriller316

I think they brought Joey in for a reason. With Woodley and Worlids big question marks, I see them going after an OLB early. Even if Woodley or Worlids are back we don’t have any good depth behind them. Carter and Sly were horrible when on the field. I can see Dee Ford in Black and Gold.

  • Lucus Rodriguez

agree. when you watch the tape a lot of the big plays taylor gave up was because he was expecting help over the top. or in the case with the TD he gave up to Torrey Smith expecting to pass the receiver to an inside zone that simply wasn’t picked up
