Free Agents Maurice Jones-Drew, Lance Moore Currently Meeting With Steelers On Southside

The Pittsburgh Steelers haven’t had any free agent visitors since last Friday, but they have two of them in on Wednesday.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Lance Moore and Jacksonville Jaguars free agent running back Maurice Jones-Drew are currently at the Steelers facility on the Southside having talks.

The visit with Moore has been known about for several days now, but it wasn’t until Wednesday morning that Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Jones would also be in town.

Should the Steelers wind up signing Moore on Wednesday for anything more than the minimum for his accrued years, it could mean that free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery has decided to sign with the Carolina Panthers. However, the Steelers could be using Moore as leverage against Cotchery, who is supposed to make a decision soon as to who he will sign with after meeting with the Panthers on Monday.

As far as Jones-Drew goes, the veteran running back reportedly has other teams interested in him, so it won’t be too surprising if he leaves Pittsburgh unsigned. The Steelers currently have just over $2 million in salary cap space heading into Wednesday and unless a restructure or extension is reported, that’s all they’ll have to work with until June.

More than anything else, both Moore and Jones-Drew will likely have physicals done on Wednesday and be sent on their merry way for future talks should no deals be consummated.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • Kevin Gobleck

Hope we get MJD, that’d be one hell of a 1-2 punch

  • Iron Cadet

If we draft a receiver do we really need a free agent receiver? That would mean either the free agent or our draft pick would be the number 4.

  • steelster

need to sign Carrington first and then see how much money is left over. Very disappointed the steelers aren’t looking at other DE’s right now, we have no starter.

  • PA2AK

Who’s available? And i’m actually glad they are looking at all options. What happens if the the DE pos. falls through?…better have some alternative plans in the works. not like they put out a priority list and DE fell to the bottom. They have to be thinking the same thing as you…DE is #1 priority.

  • Paddy

I expect MJD would love it here, what the hell sign Moore too.

  • Ben Saluri

At least if we sign Moore and let Cotchery walk, chances are we pickup another comp pick. Moore is considered a street FA, so they would not cancel out.

  • steelster

Robert Ayers from the broncos is available. He is good against the run and is only 28. Bring him in to check out.

  • sean mcmartin

eagles will take a 3rd rounder for desean jackson..what do you think?

  • Jay

He makes too much money and got a arrogant attitude!

  • Jay

Agreed! They really need to go after Carrington or we will be forced to sign back Keisel! No rookie DE is gonna be able to come in and start right away we seen that failure with ziggy and Heyward!

  • hchristi15

Not to mention, we currently do not have a 3rd round pick.

  • Jay

Right! And if we get a comp pick you can’t trade those!

  • steelster

Not only that I don’t want them to select a DE in the first or second round the steelers have too many other needs.

  • hchristi15

No telling what, if any, pick Goodell seizes for the Tomlin field incident.

  • steelster

The steelers can’t afford his contract. He is somewhat injury prone and a bit of a head case. Chip Kelly has told him not to worry about these rumors.

  • steelster

the 49ers would also have to be punished for their sideline incident.

  • Bill Sechrengost

Sorry, I would have to say no to that. This guy is only 6′ 3″ and 276 pounds. He’s a smaller version of Ziggy and we know how good he was against the run. I think we need a taller, bigger version for the end position.

  • steeltown

Yea but if we don’t then our #4 and #5 are both more than likely undrafted players.. I believe we need another quality WR with experience on roster

  • steelster

ok, didn’t realize he was that small thanks. Do you have any DE suggestions outside of Carrington.

  • Bill Sechrengost

I just took a look at some of the free agent DE’s and there’s really nothing there with any size. Most of them are like Ayers or smaller. That is why the signing of Carrington is so important. The only other big DE out there is Adam Carriker from Washington and he’s 30 years old and has been injured the last few years. Pretty slim pickings.

  • steelster

yes, the steelers may end up with a one year fix at DE.

  • srdan

It’s never a good thing to lose two of the top 3 players at any position. Unless they are dreadful, which is far from what our core was last year.

  • srdan

IDK bud, a lot of these late twenties RBs have it stuck in their head that htey should still be the guy. He is not going to be given that opportunity here. I would love the signing, because it would prolong Bell’s career.

  • PA2AK

I was going to ask if he’s a good fit for 3-4 DE…thanks.

  • PA2AK

I’d still check him out. I literally have no clue who is even out there that could possibly be a 3-4 DE on day one.

  • Danielito Caza

Plenty of good Defensive players in the draft.

  • PA2AK

yes…but not likely to find a day one starter at DE or NT given who the steelers likely target with #1 and #2

  • RMSteeler

He’ll make the Wallace 3rd rounder a 4th round pick. Goodell doesn’t want the Steelers to have a 3rd.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Maurice Jones Through and Lance ‘looking for’ Moore are not at the top of my list.

  • Smashmouth

isn’t LeGarrett Blount still available i imagine he wouldn’t command to high of a price and he really helped the pats last year anyone else think he might be helpful

  • Iron Cadet

Don’t forget we still have moye and jb. Either one I’m ok with being a 4 or 5

  • steelster

    and you know this how?

  • RMSteeler

Didn’t say I know. But comp picks should be announced next week at owners meeting. Goodell hasn’t done anything yet. Would be a move he could take isn’t it? Would be the Goodell way.

  • shawn

very astute points … IF a big IF we draft one early … i hope we dont pick up a FA and let him play right away !

  • shawn

    definitely !

  • Iron Cadet

I think it’s pretty much a given we will draft a receiver in the one of the first three rounds

  • shawn

    Hope So !
