Report: Free Agent DE Alex Carrington Still In Pittsburgh Meeting With Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed former Sand Diego Chargers nose tackle Cam Thomas to a two-year contract on Friday and according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, their other Friday guest, Buffalo Bills free agent defensive end Alex Carrington, is still meeting with the team.

This is great news and hopefully the Steelers can end the week by signing Carrington, who would then likely start at left defensive end opposite Cameron Heyward.

The Steelers let unrestricted defensive end Ziggy Hood leave this week as he signed a four-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday. Also gone is backup defensive lineman Al Woods, who signed a two-year contract with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

    Good…. tick tock tick tock

  • Cols714

Want. If we get Carrington to along with Thomas then we’ve upgraded significantly over Hood and Woods.

  • The Great Mr Slippery

agreed. i think carrington has some untapped potential

  • SFIC

    Hopefully he passes the physical

Hard to believe that so much of my day has involved checking obsessively for any updates on Carrington. I realize he’s not a superstar, but he’d be a huge signing right now for the Steelers — an upgrade over Hood, especially important with our complete lack of depth on the d-line. Hopefully they work something out with him before, say, the Browns get hold of him.

  • Kareem Daniels

Remember, he’s coming off an injuries so the medical could be taking longer. I hope they get him signed

  • mlc43

Very good news! I hope we get this done!

  • Paddy

He has to pass a physical and that might be tough

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Ha! That makes two of us. I need to do something more productive.

  • Ike Evans

    Who?

  • Bradys_Dad

I really like the idea of Carrington and Heyward on the ends. If we get good play out of our OLBs we may actually have something here.

  • PA2AK

The highest paid DE in the league…cuz it would be surprising that the Steelers go after anything other than that!

  • http://batman-news.com steellife007

Come on, get this deal done (as long as the numbers make sense). I really liked this player coming out of college and hoped the steelers could have gotten him that yr….really think he has way more upside in our system than Hood!

  • Matt Manzo

What were his injuries? Sorry for being lazy, I’m hung over!

  • Alexander Sebastian Heath

If they are in the meeting this long, they probably are hassling with the price. Agent talk. I think its obviously Steelers are very interested but at right price only.

  • steeltown

Torn quad tendon, oddly enough happened while engaged with Jets OG Willie Colon

  • shawn

do u think this would be a wash, downgrade, upgrade or just too soon to tell in regards to letting Woods & Hood go ? I am convinced that Woods was much better than Thomas … was comfortable with Hood, but would be nice to see if Carrington has more ability

  • shawn

those are not good … i still can not go 100% after 20+ years .. hope it wasn’t that bad … scar tissue is hard to get rid of !

  • steeltown

I think BOTH have the potential to be upgrades.. lets not forget that Woods hasn’t really done much in his NFL career, Thomas has more experience and better size for the NT position.

Carrington I think has the potential to flourish as a 3-4 DE

  • William Bigelow

Hold him hostage until he signs !!!

  • James Kling

    IMO, Woods > Cam
Carrington > Hood (in the 3-4)

  • shawn

im kind of thinking that … but of course i have NO clue !

  • http://batman-news.com steellife007

Im not being a smartass when I say this but surgery has come a long way in the last 20+ yrs…but yea hopefully he is good to go and sooner rather than later!

  • shawn

lol funny but true … do they even do surgery with those types of injuries … I know I wouldn’t like anything invasive … unless absolutely necessary … scar tissue can be broken down .. just very difficult not sure if this being a tendon is different, not familiar with the specifics of his injury at all .

  • http://batman-news.com steellife007

I don’t know any specifics regarding that type of injury….I really have not kept track of him since he got drafted by the bills but loved his potential in our system when he was coming out of college so I hope they can land him and he is healthy bc it would be kinda cool to see what he can do.

  • Paddy

He just left town no contract for him today

  • William Bigelow

Same thing here, been checking periodically throughout the day to see if Carrington had met with the brass & hopefully signed ….

  • Milliken Steeler

That was actually a very good observation Steel. Kudos, as that went right over my head initially.
