Report: Steelers Free Agent DL Al Woods To Visit Packers, Cardinals After Titans

Pittsburgh Steelers unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Al Woods visited with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday and Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported he had signed with them.

Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean is now refuting Bouchette’s report on Twitter and says Woods still has free agent visits scheduled with the Green Bay Packers and the Arizona Cardinals.

Woods was originally claimed off waivers by the Steelers from the Seattle Seahawks in November of 2011, but was inactive for the rest of that season. In 2012, Woods saw action on the defensive line and on special teams for the first 14 game, making two starts. In total he played 30 snaps on defense that season mostly at the defensive end position.

In 2013, Woods made the move to nose tackle during the offseason and training camp and he wound up playing 223 snaps on defense and stated two games due to injuries on the defensive line.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • StarSpangledSteeler

    F!

  • srdan

    This hurts.

Unless they really like someone on the FA market, or Nix, I don’t get it.

  • dkoy85

    Son-of-uh!!!

  • dgh57

    Well that just plain SUCKS!!!

  • Kevin Gobleck

HEY Ed just tweeted “Hold on. Steelers DE Al Woods deal may not be done after all in Tennessee.”

  • mlc43

This stings a little. I think DL is getting moved higher and higher in priority for the draft. CB and DL are the biggest needs in my opinion now. See how the rest of the pre draft works out.

  • Menace_501

See the price tag first, then we will see if it was a bad move or not on our part. Although I really liked keeping him.

  • hchristi15

Really, really wanted to keep him. Interested to see contract details. Also, interested to see how Colbert responds. Does this mean we must resign Ziggy and/or Brett?

  • William Weaver

Capable backup is all he was, calm down. :)

  • mlc43

A capable back up in a thin DL corp. It’s not a catastrophe but it isn’t the best news either.

  • T R

You forgot Ed Bouchette reported that so it aint true yet.. he has more visits with other teams this week…

  • William Weaver

Worse news if they over paid to keep him

  • harding36

This is unexpected. Thought he’d be back.

  • Iron Cadet

Can we at least egg ziggy back please? I have no faith in nick Williams right now and we have other needs in the draft

  • mlc43

    The winds of change lol

  • srdan

Actually the part that bothers me more is losing a young player that was in the system for a couple years, got a chance to play. Did well….then lost to FA.

I’m glad we temporarily stopped that bleeding with the Worldis signing. Losing young players with the arrow pointing up is not a way to run a team.

Perhaps you are right, he is a career backup, but a very servicible one.

  • 20Stoney

Agree about not overpaying him. Bad part is that he could back up DE and NT.

  • Shannon Stephenson

Woods probably wants more than what we are willing to give plus I am sure there is a team willing to give him better then what he was getting.

  • StrengthOfVictory

I’ve got to think that most teams he visits are looking to sign him for only 1-2 years. I think the Steelers only lose him if he’s all but promised a starting job somewhere else. If the Steelers sign him for 2-3, I think he stays.

  • William Weaver

Agree with you but we have to trust the organization a little. They know him and his future more then us. Also, they might have offered him what they thought he was worth and he has said no. D line is a worry for us right now. Your right about that.

  • William Weaver

What do you all think of BJ Raji? FA we could talk to?

  • 20Stoney

Just saw David Johnson signed with the Chargers

  • srdan

I don’ t know technique well enough to critique him that way. But I know that he wants out of Green bay because teh DL does not have enough freedom. I think that our scheme doesn’t offer him more (but I don’t konw for sure, all i know is big snack did the same thing over and over 80% of the game to a different gap). Plus the reason the packers are talking with Woods as well is because Raji wants stupid money.

But i think he is very productive.

  • Derick L Young

What is the big deal losing Al Woods? The guy was cut over 5 times i think.

  • Derick L Young

no, Steelers have no money for that

  • 20Stoney

He played well, could back up the entire line and we have no depth there. I think the amount of teams that have him scheduled to visit says something.

  • Derick L Young

you base his play off how many teams schedule a visit for him? alright… A rookie like Brent Urban can replace him.

  • Paddy

    signed with Titans

  • SteelerFan11

Why is everyone so high on Al Woods? If we can sign Ziggy back at a good price – and possibly bring Keisel back at vet minimum – I think our DL isn’t looking too shabby…And yes I know Ziggy hasn’t played up to a #1 pick, but he is NEVER hurt, which is rare for the steelers over the last few years. He would be a good compliment to Heyward.

  • 243546

Cool. The FO probably asked him to get some offers, and give the Steelers a chance to match or beat them, before signing else where.

  • 243546

A capable back up who was just coming into his own. Woods is going to starting for someone next year.

  • 243546

    Raji is over rated.

  • 243546

I would start Woods over McLendon or Hood.

  • William Weaver

The bad franchises over pay for people. Trust the steelers a little. They see him everyday and not only know his worth better then us but have a plan. I am worried about the d-line too but they have something up their sleeve. I hope!! Lol

  • blackandgoldBullion

Despite the Salary Cap explosion there are only pockets of strength so far with teams loading up on Safeties, and a few others here and there. And with some teams having 10’s of millions in cap space, you will get some high profile cuts, like Woodley, Ware and Revis.

I did check long ago and there seemed to be a huge list of D linemen FA’s out there and more have also been cut since yesterday. Interesting. I wonder if the Steelers like any of the guys out there. And if they wait long enough might they get someone on the cheap?

  • Douglas Andrews

Still wondering if there is a plan to bring in another FA D lineman. Woods is a good backup not sure if he’s starter material but I do like his flexibility being as he can play both DE and NT.

  • 20Stoney

No. I base his play on what I saw. I assume the teams that are interested in him are doing the same.

  • joed32

No, he is visiting 2 other teams. No deal with the Titans.

  • george

I didn’t think they would let both Hood and Woods go.

  • Jazz

You would take Ziggy Hood over Al Woods? Ziggy Hood never has and never will fit the 3-4 scheme. It was a waisted #1 Draft pick from the beginning.

  • Jazz

Enough of the Grand Pa’s! If they resign Kiesel it will only be for one year, same goes for Foote.

  • Derick L Young

again, i don’t understand the BIG deal with Al Woods leaving. Sure it would nice he stayed but a BIG deal… no.

  • Iron Cadet

Woods is already signed elsewhere so that ship has sailed. I would take hood over arnfelt and Williams. Which is what we have right now besides cam

  • shawn

did u see his play at the end of last year … thats what people are bummed about !

  • shawn

    wow neither did I

  • Derick L Young

It would of been nice to keep him but not at that price when the team is cap strapped and with so many other needs. JMO I do like Woods.

  • shawn

But just maybe we could have locked him up at a cheaper price before FA … hmmm food for thought, yes u are right it would have been hard to afford 2.5m/yr .. but he looked promising with what little playing time he got!

  • Derick L Young

they were trying to get under the cap before FA on Tuesday started. Hard to sign a guy when you don’t have the money.

  • shawn

weren’t they well under the cap.. how did they get Mitchell so fast then … hmmm
