Report: Steelers Free Agent WR Jerricho Cotchery Expected To Sign With Panthers

It appears as though Pittsburgh Steelers free agent wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery has made his choice and it appears to be the Carolina Panthers, according to the REAL Ian Rapoport of nfl.com.

Cotchery visited with Panthers several days ago and now it appears as though he will be leaving the Steelers after playing the last three seasons in the black and gold.

Cotchery’s 10 touchdowns last season led the Steelers and his presence in the locker room will certainly be missed as well.

The Steelers reportedly wanted to re-sign Cotchery, who now figures to be a starter with the Panthers in 2014.

    Bummed…

  • Jay Jaber

Ok good now we can draft a WR in the first round. Brown and hopefully evans on the outside and Wheaton in the slot

  • Michael Pearce

Who do we take in the first round? I dont see it unless Mike Evans drops to us(doubtful). Benjamin will most likely not last until our second pick. So what do we do; go up to get Evans or drop back to get Benjamin? I say we will be taking the best CB at 15(most likely Dennard).

  • steeltown

    Damn….

  • Paddy

Good his recruitment has become a pain in the ass

  • harding36

He probably figures he can just come back next year if he doesn’t like his new team…

  • steeltown

Ok, so now, sign Moore to provide quality depth and draft WR early… guess none of that is really news

  • Paddy

Don’t let the door hit him in the ass

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

He made a business decision, as much as I love the Steelers. If I was an NFL player and a free agent from them. If the ravens offered 4-5 million more. Bye. Bills don’t pay themselves.

  • Steelers12328882

Front office kicked in the nuts again. They’re taking a beating! Hello 1st rd. receiver.

  • Jason Vancil

Bad loss. Ben and he seemed to have developed a rapport.

  • Brian Tollini

Neither. Take Matthews in round 2 if available.

  • Kevin Gobleck

It’s official they’ve reached an agreement on a contract just waiting to sign

  • Rod Hedrick

Wow didn’t expect to lose him. I liked him, kind of HInes Ward light. I really would love to get Evans or Benjamin in the draft.

  • absteelers

Loved Cotch…but ready to move on! Let’s sign Moore, sign Carrington and draft a WR in the second round unless Evans fall in the first!

  • Babybull

Ben needs to step up as the leader go up to FO ask Colbert what the hell he doing he’s killing are team.

  • Pete Johnson

The disaster continues. Unreal. And I wouldn’t be so quick believe it was about money, there have been an awful lot of Steelers walking out the door for not a lot of money this offseason. The handwriting is on the wall even now with the players as far as where this team is at. You can’t hide it anymore, this a roster completely devoid of any real young superstar talent outside of two guys in Cam and Bell. Maybe DD too but that is about it, rest are a bunch of huge question marks.

These are pretty low times for this franchise, there is just no denying it at this point.

  • srdan

That is an overreaction. We are talking about a #3 that when the year started last year was pegged as the 4th or fifth on the depth chart.

  • T R

This sting can be easily healed with them 10 TDS going back to Heath and drafting a nice WR in draft and we will be just find.. This shows a good one year with the Steelers can get you paid in the NFL. And he needed this as this probably his last contract. I dont blame him for taking the most money to take care himself and his family. Good Luck Jerricho…. his going to be hard to get up to speed next year with Cam probably out till Training Camp or longer.

  • steeltown

    Because we lost Cotchery?

  • dgh57

Barring a FA pickup looks like we double dip at the WR position but at least this is the year for it!.

  • Pete Johnson

We are talking about a guy who had 10TD’s last yr on a cast of WR that had not many more total. Who was “pegged” as the number 2 WR right now or number 3 at worst.

  • treeher

We play at Carolina this year. Hopefully Cotch will miss that game with a sore ankle and I won’t have to root against him.

  • Pete Johnson

Have you missed the offseason? Do you realize what our roster looks like, and how we have no money to fix it even if we wanted to?

  • steeltown

Woodley, Sanders, Hood, Woods, Cotchery and Dwyer… the only one I thought was a lock to return was, oddly enough Cotchery…. just saying

  • chris ward

Big loss for the Steelers as far as the red zone production Cotch had in 13′. Didn’t expect to lose Cotchery pre free-agency, thought him and Al Woods were locks to be re-signed.

  • srdan

I’m the first to admit that losing two players at one position is not ideal. (cpt. obvious, lol) But his 10 TDs last year were not a product of him making amazing plays. Not to take anything away from him, but I can think of two where the covearage was completely blown because young secondaries were tripping over AB. I guess my thought is that we could probably plug another veteran in there (Avant, moore) and expect 6 TDs.

All I was saying that the mod said Colbert is “killing’ this team by getting rid of a 3rd receiver. “C’mon maaaan”

  • Zachary Wise

He definitely built a rapport with Ben last year, but if we get some of Heath’s production back, we won’t miss him a whole lot. There’s no way he’d put up 10 TDs again. He had 2 in 2010 and 0 in 2011. In fact, he didn’t even break 20 receptions either year as well.

  • http://thereactionblog.com Michael Stickings

I like the guy a lot, and he was really good last year, but seriously, there’s no need to panic.

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

Relax, there is no reason to invest millions in a wr who is 32, had an good season but will not be repeated. And would be relegated to the 4th or 5th option in the passing game.

  • Zachary Wise

Plus, he won’t be catching anything from Cam until the middle of the summer at the earliest. They might be on the same page by the time Cotch is 34.

  • StrengthOfVictory

Nothing but love for Cotch, but this one stings. Tired of having our players cherry-picked when they show their talent in a Steelers uniform. No one wanted Cotch when he left the Jets. This guy was a cornerstone of this corps. Hopefully, youth can step up and shine.

  • MDPensFan

I think they’re laying low this year, trying to get out of the contract re-structuring business, and make some noise next off-season when they really have the cap room to improve the roster.

  • blackandgoldBullion

Ah, Jack Lambert! Have you been watching those old Super Bowls. Loved that guy. I say best CB, also. Most depth in any WR class ever, and they have been finding gems in the 3rd round or lower. I was hoping Cotch would still be here though. It is a little tougher to find a tall guy if you wait until the 3rd round.

Maybe they draft Ebron, although I don;t think he will make it past Buffalo.

  • Steelers12328882

    I doubt he lasts either.

  • blackandgoldBullion

I’m not crazy about Moore, but it seems like slim pickings right now. Hmmmmmmm.

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

Seriously? Brown #1, Wheaton #2, Miller #3 Bell #4 Veteran #5 Rookie #6 options in the passing game. How many touchdowns has he averaged per season like 2? His playing time was going to be scaled back. And he offers no lateral burst, and will be 33 during the season. There is only so much they are going to be willing to pay for that type of player.

  • dkoy85

    Good God man…

  • blackandgoldBullion

I would have been happy to Cotchery, Woods and Dwyer.

  • William Bigelow

    Well, that $uck$ ….

  • http://thereactionblog.com Michael Stickings

And maybe at this point in his career he just wanted to play at home and be a starter. Hard not to respect that.

With Miller hopefully back to full health and Wheaton hopefully emerging, Cotch may have been nothing more than the #4 option, maybe #5 if you count Le’Veon as a legit receiving option. And it’s highly likely we’ll get a quality WR or two in the draft, even if not in the first round, and it’s likely that at least the first one drafted will be ready to go out and contribute from day one.

  • steeltown

    Agreed

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

Cards can have Dwyer. And Al Woods=Cam Thomas

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

Wheaton, Allen, Mitchell, Thomas, Vince Williams, All under age 28.

  • connfyoozed .

A “disaster”? It’s March 20th. Put the weapon down.

  • http://www.nyob.com/ Dr. Doom

We have plenty of money, but there is no reason to be stupid. You want to be Oakland? Having money to spend, and being able to spend what you have wisely, two different things.

  • SFIC

    Bummer

  • PA2AK

We lost our #3/4, 33 year old receiver coming of a statistical anomaly of a year?!

Well…might as well sell the franchise, demolish all of Pittsburgh and start over.

  • srdan

    lmao

  • RMSteeler

No need to be desperate. Would rather wait for fresh FA meat after the draft and post 6/1 cuts than sign mediocre and/or injury questionable current FA’s. Team really needs a TOUGH over the middle, slot possession receiver. Address it in the second round of FA’s and/or in the draft. Moore isn’t that type of receiver and I doubt his body is flexible enough to change to slot receiver. Just like Ziggy, not a good fit for needs/scheme.

  • steeltown

Moore has spent most of his career as a slot receiver, solid route running and good hands

  • PA2AK

depends…some say Wheaton’s skill set and experience is good for the ‘tough’ assignment and he’s certainly been a possession type receiver. Maybe Moore fits perfectly. either way…no need to spend a ton of money just to have a veteran at #3/#4.

  • RMSteeler

I believe he played mostly outside last year.

  • RMSteeler

With Wheaton’s speed, he’s likely to be #2 WR outside if no other moves are made. Plus, he only has 8 more fingers to break if he plays the slot.

  • steeltown

Well regardless of where he lined up last year, he can be productive, if we don’t sign him soon he’ll be joining Cotchery in Carolina

The fans in NO were pissed when he was released

  • RMSteeler

    Nice.

  • Andrew Alberico

The Steelers have to draft 2 WR’s or 1 WR and 1 TE early in the draft, along with a CB.

  • Pete Johnson

Yep business decision. Apparently the Steelers wanted him to play for free if your 4-5m statement were to be believed.

    “David Todd
‏@DavidMTodd Reports suggesting Cotchery 2 years, $5 million. Guessing #Steelers weren’t going above $4 mil.”

  • Pete Johnson

Do you consider 2 yrs 5m a “ton of money”? LOL if you do.

  • PA2AK

Well, I do, personally. In the NFL..no. The problem I have is the Steelers have overpaid a ton of veterans after the last 3 superbowl appearances. This is one of the biggest reasons for their 8-8 record. It stunts growth or doesn’t put us in a position where growth is FORCED on us. I remember when we let go of big time players and everyone complains…then a no-namer steps in and becomes the next favorite player. WR is one spot that the steelers are just going to hold off on I think. I’d rather them spend the rest of their cap room on a DE before what amounts to possibly a #3/#4 receiver.

  • Tom

Others have suggested signing Kenny Britt. A horrible idea in my opinion….
If the Steelers wanted to sign a risk/reward guy, why not find out the price tag on Justin Blackmon? IF he ever gets act together, he has the potential to be very good.. I’d rather see them take a chance on a guy with a drug/alcohol struggles than a guy with constant “blue light” problems.

Also, Nate Washington may end up being a cap casualty in Tennessee.

  • Pete Johnson

I agree with all of that except the last sentence, especially considering what our WR core experience is right now. Which is “limited” to put it kindly. 2.5m for a 3rd/4th is market value, actually probably below market considering the production he had last yr. And Cotchery is a 3 not a 4, and would have been a 2 to start the season had he stayed. 2/5 is a no brainer with all that said, unless the FO realizes that 2014 will be a lost season pretty much.

  • PA2AK

And I can agree with that if we are only looking at last year. Look at his career stats. He was sharing reps early last season with Wheaton (until he was hurt). If he stayed for this year…he wouldn’t smell 10 tds. We have the #1 and #2 TE and #1RB back (all of who we started without), #1WR in AB, #2 in Wheaton (trust me, they’ll put it on him to produce this year just like they did after AB’s rookie season), Depth in Moye/Justin Brown. All of that, and his career average of 3 tds/year (counting last years 10)…he’s not worth paying for last years production to the Steelers. To Carolina…yeah…that’s why he’s there. Does anyone else remember watching how slow Cotch was last year? I’m sorry, but his two best seasons prior to last year were 6 and 5 tds.

I’ll miss his veteran presence and character for sure, but I think the Steelers saw him as expendable. I kind of do too.

  • Shannon Stephenson

This is his last paycheck and it wasn’t like Cotchery had been here for his career. IMO he did what was best for him and I feel he made the right personal decision. Pittsburgh had to be offering less or he would have stayed.

  • Shannon Stephenson

You hit the nail on the head.

  • Matthew Suloman

    He’s been since 2006

  • Babybull

Most Tds are from blown coverages so what are you saying

  • Babybull

You need to stop it if we would have signed him you be all over him let’s be real he was a good player that new system now starting off at point zero again Bens no spring chicken

  • Babybull

You hit it right on but some of these people don’t want to here truth their still in the 70s but let’s be real the way this teams looks we last place in are division that hurts.

  • Babybull

We don’t have money have you been reading paper if we did we would have signed FA

  • Babybull

Heath is older then JC o that’s diff

  • Babybull

Yea that’s what I’m hopeing for cap should increase again but remember bens up again you cannot give him another 100 mill contract again that’s killing are team plus it might be time to clean house up top in the FO we lost two draft classes poor drafting that has to change we must hit this year in first 3 rounds are we will be in serious trouble.

  • Babybull

He lost his job last year to kid from OKlahoma

  • Babybull

If you go by last year Weaton was a 4 he didn’t do anything let’s hope he does better

  • PA2AK

obviously we should hope he does better. he was a rookie and was also injured for a good part of the year. AB didn’t even get injured his rookie season and came down with 16 catches and no TDs…then his second year happened. so it’s not out of the question.

  • T R

no he is not..they are the same at at 31
