Report: Steelers Tomlin, Colbert Spent Time With Oklahoma State CB Justin Gilbert Wednesday Night

According to Tony Pauline of draftinsider.net, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Kevin Colbert were both seen spending time with Oklahoma State cornerback Justin Gilbert Wednesday night.

Gilbert had his Pro Day on Thursday and according to Pauline, “he looked the part” during it. Both Tomlin and Colbert were present for that as well.

The Steelers need a cornerback in this draft and there’s an outside chance Gilbert will still be on the board when the 15th pick comes around. In his latest mock draft released on Thursday, ESPN draftnik Mel Kiper Jr. now has the Gilbert going to the Steelers.

Both Tomlin and Colbert also attended the Pro Day of Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard several days ago, so they are really serious about getting to know these two young players.

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • steeltown

The selection may very well be Gilbert or Dennard, whichever is there, if either… this of course only if Carrington and Keisel are signed

  • Kevin Gobleck

Man I hope we get him!

  • Kevin Gobleck

Or do you think they have enough trust in Arnfelt? Either way we would have to have a D-Line first

  • srdan

    Wow, ziggy got 4/16mill

  • srdan

Should get us a good comp w that dea. I expected half of that

  • steeltown

Not yet im sure, but he’ll have every chance to be a backup this season

  • steeltown

Sounds about right,. he’ll be starting as a DT in their 4man front

  • NW86

This would be my first choice at 1.15 – unfortunately I just don’t think he will be there. Dennard, maybe.

  • Kevin Gobleck

It depends on what teams before us (Lions, Rams) want in there corner if they want a Man guy they might go with Dennard then

  • James Wilson

    Lions will take Dennard.

  • steelster

Corners play a much bigger role in the steelers defense. A 3-4 DE role is to contain the run. If Gilbert is there that is the pick.

  • steelster

Dennard could very easily go to the titans they just lost verner.

  • Kenneth Wilt

I think the Steelers may be taking the “youth movement” really serious on D. We were old, but we may not be any more, especially if Ike isn’t a starter.

  • Kevin Gobleck

True, but if we have 0 pressure then the QB can wait all day to throw and still pick apart our defense

  • steelster

or they could take eric ebron

  • WilliamSekinger

Every once in a great while, the Steelers will ‘go get’ their guy in the first round. I think this may be the year. If one of these two corners falls to them fantastic, but if it looks like both will be gone, this could be the year they move up in draft position.

  • shawn

I would have been pretty disappointed if they let him go for HALF that, but i too am surprised at the amount

  • Kevin Gobleck

It will be very interesting to see what happens with who is starting next year

  • shawn

Neither give me goose bumps … i doubt that very much … they move up when they are in love with a guy like “Troy” not when a decent guy fills a need … dont see this happening !

  • Kyle Owens

Lets not forget about Nick Williams.

  • Russ Ruffing

It’s a smokescreen I hope. Wouldn’t surprise me if they are throwing people off here so that they can go after one of the beast WR’s in this draft. With the Lions signing Golden Tate yesterday, there are not any teams drafting ahead of them with definite WR needs, and the Steelers don’t want any teams thinking they have to jump ahead of them for a top-tier WR. My pick is Mike Evans. Steelers do not like picking Corners in the first round. You have to go all the way back to Chad Scott in 1997 for a first round corner. In the interim they’ve taken three WRs in the first round (Santonio Holmes 2006, Plaxico Burress 2000, and Troy Edwards 1999).

  • Kyle Owens

If Kelvin Benjamin, Mike Evans, Eric Ebron, Justin Gilbert and Darqueze Dennard are all on the board at 1.15, Who’s the pick?

  • steelster

The 3-4 outside LBs job is to apply pressure on the QB. We have never had a DE get double digit sacks in a season and there is a reason for that. Don’t get me wrong I still want to see the de’s apply pressure but any time I see them get a sack I see it as a unexpected bonus.

  • steeltown

Of course, I have Williams and Arnfelt making the roster this year as backups

  • steelster

Kevin, the steelers will have 8 starters with 2 years of experience or less on defense. The steelers are completely rebuilding the defense but I don’t think the FO will use the term rebuilding not sure why maybe it’s bad pr.

  • joed32

Don’t forget that when we add an FA that wipes out the comp for one that we lose.

  • srdan

I didn’t realize that. So if this safety makes a probowl, we don’t get anything for ziggy?

    hmm, interesting

  • steelster

I doubt it. They would have to give up a pick and why do that in a draft that has the most talent coming out in over 10 years. Let a player fall to them we have so many needs.

  • steeltown

That’s a tough one, I think I’d go Gilbert… CB and Kick Returner instantly upgraded

  • Ike Evans

    Agree

  • Ike Evans

    I can’t see him getting past the rams but I hope….if he’s not there and mike Evans isn’t there….idk….maybe a d lineman?

  • steelster

I can see Mike Evans landing on the bills or the rams. His 40 time pushed him higher than the 15th pick.

  • steelster

It comes down to ebron and gilbert and that is a tough choice, I say gilbert. Benjamin isn’t even a first round talent the steelers need to stay away from that guy.

  • Kenneth Wilt

No, they won’t use the term rebuilding because I think they know that it implies you can’t win. This team can win, it just may be a few years until they reach potential.

  • steelster

I agree and hopefully before big ben gets too old

  • tcirish53@gmail.com

Somehow not getting anything in return for Ziggy seems very appropriate!!! :-)

  • Kevin Reich

Definitely not Benjamin at 15. He is a late 1st round 2nd.

  • SumnerYoung

3-4 DE’s can’t return kickoffs either. Well, Cam Heyward is pretty good when he scoops up a squib kick, but you know what I mean. Gilbert is a potential shutdown corner AND a great kick returner. I love that combo. Not sure he’ll be there at 1.15 though.

  • SumnerYoung

It’s moving quickly from the oldest defense in the league to one of the youngest.

  • Will Hammer

i of these guys will be there Gilbert or Denard .Both of them are good at diff skill sets . Steelers got to go D and rebuild . I’d draft D in the first 4 rds …

  • Superdriller316

Trade back and pick up more picks. There are a ton of good CB’s and a ton of tall WR’s that can be had later in the draft. We need as many picks as possible. I wouldn’t mind any of the the 5 but, one good corner isn’t going to win a lot of games. Revis is the so called best CB in the league. How many games did the Buc’s win? Benjamin has been spotty at best and has went from 3rd to T5th on Mayock’s top 5. Evans was held to 4 catches for 8 yards against EJ Gaines from Mizz. Drafting a DE or NT at 15 would be down right stupid. It took Cam two years to get on the field and Ziggy was a waste. The notion of BPA is dumb. You need the best player that fits your system and what you need. If the BPA is a QB are we going to draft him in the first? Hell no we won’t, it’s not a need. We have a ton of holes to fill and we don’t have the money to fill with better than average players. We need to have the best draft ever.

  • Will Hammer

Speed and attitude on D with young guys .. Work in Progress but rewards great…First 4 rds tough D players who like to hit . Rebuild this D with swagger toughness and skill .

  • Shannon Stephenson

Gilbert is an exciting player to me. The way things are looking for him however makes me think he will not be there at 15 but maybe else drops to us

  • MC

Man I hope they bring Kiesel back for one more year. Its not like he declined in play like Ryan Clarke did last season.

  • MC

Justin Gilbert would solve our CB need and can take the place of kick/punt returner left by Manny Sanders. Two birds.

  • blackandgoldBullion

I’m going to be praying for this one. He will be a stud. He is necessary for the Steelers. It would require a minor miracle if the Lions, and now the Titans pass on him. Let’s hope those 2 teams sign whatever Cb’s are left in Free agency now, because that’s seems like the only way the Steelers get that lucky.

Imagine the way he plays plus a few explosive, timely returns once in a while. Remember how many games are decided by 7 points or less. Would love to have this guy or even Ebron, who should not get by the Bills.

  • steelster

The steelers 1974 draft is the best ever in nfl history and will never be beaten by any team.

  • Joeybaggadonuts

It’s a mindset. if they say they are rebuilding it alleviates the pressure to perform. The mindset is….if you’re between the lines there are expectations, you need to meet or exceed them. That’s why the down cycle is never deep or long with the Steelers.

  • Nick Steel

Kevin Colbert has a better chance of getting pregnant than drafting Justin Gilbert with the 15th pick.

  • Superdriller316

Never say never. Stranger things have happened. If you draft players to fit your scheme, and have the money to keep them in the system, it can be done.
Yes, the ’74 draft is the greatest ever but, they didn’t have FA back in ’74 either.

  • steelster

I heard his due date is on draft day

  • Derick L Young

the DE is the reason why those linebackers get to run around and make plays. they both are vital to the defense. We miss Aaron Smith badly.

  • Derick L Young

They use Brown a lot no…

  • Derick L Young

while Ben is with the Steelers, they will always have a chance. few inches from making the playoffs this year and look how bad it started…

  • c t s

steelers could very well get bold and feel that if Gilbert is the type of talent that can make an immediate impact, don’t be surprised if they pull off some type of trade to move up. granted, they’re working with less picks because of “tomlin-gate” but if they feel he can be an impact player, Gilbert’s coming to Steel town.
