Scott Brown Selects UCLA OLB Anthony Barr For Steelers In 2014 NFL Nation Mock Draft

The 2014 NFL Nation mock draft is well underway on right now as all of the team beat writers are taking part in the first-round exercise.

Scott Brown, who covers the Steelers for the site, selected UCLA outside linebacker Anthony Barr with the 15th overall selection.

Brown writes in the online chat:

This team needs pass rushers and they’re not sold on Jason Worilds as a long-term fit in Pittsburgh. I love Barr’s upside and playmaking ability. I realize he has to get better against the run but the Steelers will coach him up.

As you can clearly see by the list of the picks below, Brown passed up cornerbacks Kyle Fuller and Justin Gilbert in order to draft Barr. Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. was also still on the board as well.

Brown writes in the online chat:

I seriously considered Fuller and Beckham but I will get my cornerback and wide receiver later in he draft.

I understand Brown’s reasoning here, but think he should have grabbed either Fuller or Gilbert with the pick.

I will update this post with the rest of the picks as soon as the mock is over.

I like Barr a lot. But to say the team is not sold on Worilds is a little off the mark. Plus with Mosley still on the board, I don’t see why Steelers wouldn’t fill the bigger need of ILB first.

  • SFIC

Barr primarily plays the right side. Worilds has only been successful on the left side. We have JJ on the right. Is it worth taking Barr in hopes he will adapt to playing the left side???? I don’t like the pick. But I do feel we need to pick up another OLB no later than mid round.

  • cencalsteeler

Just mentioned this on the Peter King post previously.

  • srdan

I like barr as well. But I think we have a logjam at ILB rather than a need.

  • Lewis

I think they still have a need for a starting ILB. If Mosley is available, he’s the only one I can see filling that. Otherwise it’s not urgent. We do have a lot of backups though, and guys who can fill in and start for the time being. IMO besides Timmons, I don’t see any long term solutions on the team.

  • srdan

I could see why you would feel that there is no long term solutionson the team today, since they have only played for a year or in spences case a preaseason. But to draft someone else and not really give the 3-4 youngsters a good look is a mistake. At least it could be called a mistake since tehre are other glaring needs.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

I don’t like Barr at 1.15. He is very weak against the run and finesse against the pass. If all you want is a quick speed rusher, then draft Dee Ford.

In my opinion, J. Attaochu will be a better all around NFL/Steeler OLB than Barr.

  • Jason Vancil

    The Steelers wouldn’t take Barr.

  • Zach

I also like Barr a lot, but I don’t think the steelers draft for need at #1 — see Jarvis Jones last year, Pouncey, Ziggy…if Barr is rated higher in their board than anyone else left, including an ILB, they will take Barr. We are not set at OLB without a long-term contract for Worilds (I’m sure the FO don’t wanna put a tag on him again next year).

  • Zach

I agree, but it all comes to their evaluation of the current LB corp and how much a #1 pick would improve that. Unfortunately they haven’t been evaluating young talent well lately (see Keenan Lewis).

  • Rick Rogers

Agreed. Barr is too risky in such a solid draft. Don’t believe the Steelers have written off Worlids in any way, either. On the contrary, they’re giving him the chance to win a huge contract next year while paying him well.

The Steelers gave up too many splash plays last year, so I expect them to take a corner or two pretty high. There should be a few to pick from at 15 or later. Can never have enough LBs in the 3-4, so expect one or two along with DL and a WR, not to mention a few UDFAs. Really looking forward to the draft because they are the future. We must do better drafting in the middle rounds this year. Can’t just hit on the ends.

  • Virdin Barzey

Is this what Scott Brown would do if he was drafting? I thought this was suppose to be what we believe the Steelers would do come Thursday. No way they take Barr with the 15th pick….absolutely NO WAY.

  • Weiss Chad

I wouldn’t quite rule out spence yet. Dude gets back to where he was he can be a beast

  • Weiss Chad

Kyle fuller fits the steeler identity. Its gotta be toss up between him and dennard. If they trade back(highly likely)I can see shazier,Tuitt ,lee .I think they could really load up on picks.u got Dallas ,Arizonia,Cleveland,Carolina,San,Fransisco , Miami,Houston, all could want to trade up .

  • Weiss Chad

Good trade bait if he is there

  • MC

If they take Barr than im assuming Worilds walks next year.
I definitely wouldn’t go with Barr in round one. I’ve said this on another post, all the scouting reports i’ve read of Barr say he has no pass rush moves, why use a pick as high as 15 on a guy who doesn’t have pass rush moves and whos main goal is to rush the passer!!
We already have a guy who had the same knocks on him coming out of college in Jarvis Jones (a pick i wasn’t pleased with last draft day) and we all saw how much he struggled when he couldn’t speed rush the outside, whats worst is that Jones completely took himself out of plays by having to run upfield so much.
Well i think the same willl happen with Barr. NFL tackles are next level and you need an arsenal of moves, not just moves but counter moves if you’re gonna be a top 20 pick in my opinion. I think people fall in love with sack numbers in college and overlook the tools needed to play in this league.
Take Fuller/Dennard and go with Jeffcoat, Chricton or someone else in the rounds after. I’d rather Shazier over Barr in round one cause of his versatility.

  • steelster

If barr is on the board at 15 this is where they give the 49ers a call for a deal.

  • MC

It would be great if we could survive with Vince Williams on 2 downs and bring in Spence on sub packages.

  • blackandgoldBullion

So you’re on board with me, are you? SF also is very thin at CB and they have no speed at WR. Think those 3 positions and you could come up with several guys they may want for that 1.15 pick.

  • steelster

Yes but I just think the 49ers will make a deal around the number 10 spot though. Most likely trade partners are the dolphins and now it appears the eagles.

  • blackandgoldBullion

You may be correct but moving into the top 10 area means really giving up alot. We shall soon see.

  • dave

For one thing – positional value – a guy like Barr that is a potential 10-15 sack a year guy is going ahead of an ILB. In my opinion, the Steelers don’t really ‘smokescreen’ too much with their visits – I think if they brought him in, there is legit interest in him.

If Barr is on the board and SF calls, I was of the opinion last week that their 1st and 2nd should get the deal done, but now that Philly may be in the mix then I would want from SF 1,2 and 3rd, but not sure they would give that much…if neither trade is there, I still would not draft Barr, but Best CB available unless that is Roby…

  • srdan

This would be great. But I think it will be the other way around. Spence on 2 downs and vince on frist down. More and more its a passing league. The two down backers are now actually pass protectors IMO.

OLB or ILB would not be ideal picks, but you have to consider Barr…either way CB or LB, that player is not likely to get much time on DEF next season, but I would take a CB over Barr.

  • That would be a bad pick to me, now 3rd round fine.

  • wdhammer

Corner or wideout whoever is the best player available ., I wish they would trade down and get another 3rd rd pick .Then go ILB .
