Steelers 2014 Draft – Mock Contest

I have decided to run the same Pittsburgh Steelers mock draft contest that I ran last year and will give away another $100 to the winner. Below are the rules, so please read them and understand them.

Rule 1. You must have a Paypal account in order to receive the winnings. I’m not writing a check. I use Paypal, so you use Paypal.

Rule 2. Your entry must be posted in the comments AND sent to me via the contact form. I am going to make you jump through hoops for this and it will be easier to grade this way. No exceptions. Make sure when you send it via the comment form that you give your name, email address and the username on the blog.

Rule 3. List your top 5 draft choices for each of the 9 draft picks (include the COMP pick) in the order from 1-5 with one being the most likely. You can only list a player once. You should end with 45 players listed. YOU CANNOT DUPLICATE PLAYERS. One player per round.

Example:

Round 1: – 50 point bonus

1. Vince Young – 50 points

2. Joe Theismann – 40 points

3. Vince Evans – 30 points

4. Doug Williams – 20 points

5. Tim Tebow – 10 points

Round 2: – 50 point bonus

1. Franco Harris – 50 points

2. Limas Sweed – 40 points

3. John Stallworth – 30 points

4. O.J. Simpson – 20 points

5. Rae Carruth – 10 points

Rule 4. The grading will be done by round and pick with the high score winning. Should your first pick in each round be correct, you will get 50 points per round for getting the round number correct and 50 points for listing that player first. Should you have the right round, but the player is listed fifth on your list, you will have 60 points for that pick. If the player that you list is selected in the wrong round, you will receive the points for wherever you list him. For example, If Sweed is taken in round one, you would receive only 40 points for that being as you had him listed in the wrong round.

Rule 5: Tiebreaker – Please guess what overall pick number Aaron Colvin will be.

Rule 6: Contest closes after first 100 entries. I love you people, but this will take time to score and you need to give me a few days after the draft ends to do this.

Rule 7: I have the final ruling on anything that is not laid clear enough above.

Rule 8: One entry per person and if I find you trying to get around this, beware.

Rule 9:DEADLINE IS NOON EST ON THURSDAY

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.
  • srdan

I love this type of stuff. Thanks Dave!

  • Tullydew

What or where is the contact form? Please explain further.

  • dennisdoubleday

What happens if the Steelers trade back and get an extra 2nd rounder? Do you get points for both if two of your 2nd rounders are taken?

  • srdan

Its int the capital bold letters above. Hover over it and youll be able to click.

  • Steelers12328882

    Sweet!

  • Tullydew

    Ok I gotcha. Thanks

  • SteelersDepot

Round points number will still correspond to pick number,
and the bonus will be given as well. Per example above, if Franco Harris and
Limas Sweed were both drafted in the second round after acquiring another
second round pick, you would then receive 190 points. Make sense?

I was listening to Colbert being interviewed on 970 ESPN this afternoon, and I was struck by something he said.

He was asked if, when looking at two positions of need in the draft (say WR and CB), if logic dictates that a team lean first toward taking the player whose positional depth is thinnest. And then wait (at least) another round on the other position, thinking there’d be a greater chance of still getting a high-quality player later on.

Colbert answered saying that this type of thinking is certainly a consideration, UNLESS you believe you have identified a specific player who is special in their position. Because if you do, you should take that player, regardless of how deep you perceive their position to be in the draft. The reason is, you don’t just want “high quality players,” you want the specific players you believe will make your team better.

While FAR from definitive (not reading tea leaves here), I immediately thought of the (growing, perhaps?) possibility of the Steelers taking a WR in the first round instead of a corner, even though most would say this draft is deeper at receiver than corner. If indeed they did this, it would mean that the Steelers believe Beckham/Benjamin (most likely candidates) to be “special,” and worth bucking positional depth for.

Listening to press conference sounds like they definitely wanna trade back.As Dave was saying on podcast I hope Barr is there and Dallas gives a third to move up one spot. Then I’m personally hoping Miami wants to trade up for Martin. As it sounds to me Colbert was talking about teams from second rd trading to 15 for a qb.imo that might be dropping down to far.

  • Brian Tollini

I think you are in the lead. Good job Man.

  • Craig Ressler

Greg, I won the contest last year and as I was looking it was beginning to looking like I might win again. So I decided to figure up the score for each submission. If my calculations are correct, however, I did not have the highest score. Assuming they are accurate, you and Tulleydew (just a few submissions before you) tied with a score of 340. You guys both tied because neither of you added the Aaron Colvin prediction. If this is the case, congrats.
