The Terrible Podcast – Talking New Steelers LB Ryan Shazier, Day Two Draft Prospects & More Episode

terriblepodcast

Season 4, Episode 101 of The Terrible Podcast is up and co-host David Todd and I get right into talking about the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and the Pittsburgh Steelers selection, Ohio State linebacker Ryan Shazier.

David and I break down the decision to draft Shazier instead of Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard and how the explosive linebacker fits into the Steelers defense. We talk about his speed, explosion and whether or not he has a chance to get on the field as a starter by Week 1.

Day two of the draft gets underway later this evening so David and I look at a few players the Steelers might have in their eyes on for rounds two or three.

We recap the entire action of the first round and spend a little time looking at what the Cleveland Browns did.

As usual, a few more talking points are mixed in and discussed during the show that are not mentioned in this recap.

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Dave “you know, we should have seen this coming.” You’re right we should have.

  • steeltown

Couldn’t agree more… Rd2: Tuitt/Nix, Demarcus Lawrence or Cody Latimer

  • Steelers12328882

Yes, all 4 of those players I would love to have(I could easily leave Nix off that list tho), but I’d also add Crichton and Hageman.

  • Biggie

Nix, Tuitt, Robinson, Matthews, Lawrence. Any of them would do in Rd2.

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Beat me to it. Great character. Big school. Durability. Production. Etc.

I think what happens is we get used to seeing a guy listed in the 20-25 range in all these mock drafts so we assume that’s where the teams rank them. Not the case. (Dallas, Pittsburgh, etc.)

  • shawn

Please … no more LBs for now .. DL or WR yes

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Here’s the thing about Dennard. People seem to forget he only ran a 4.5 forty. That is a big BIG deal when you’re covering fast WR’s deep down the field.

He’s also 5’11” with short arms. That is a big deal when you’re matched up with taller WR’s. THAT is why he fell to 1.24.

  • Addison

Also he’s very touchy feely. They call pass interference so easily anymore.

  • Addison

Crichton would be tempting. He said his pittsburgh visit was a dream come true

  • METAL_HAMMER

About our first round pick: I’ve had some time to think about it. I know he’s a good player. He runs a 4.3 and for a LB, that’s very fast, but he needs to bulk-up a bit and that may cost him some speed. I just think we should have went for a CB or WR in the first round. WR Benjamin, WR Lee and CB Dennard were still on the board when we picked. We haven’t had much luck with WRs lately. Since Antonio Brown. Maybe that’s why we looked away from a WR in the first round. Maybe this kid can get on the field and start with Timmons now that Foote is gone. Only time will tell. Hey, at least WR Evans and WR Benjamin went to NFC teams and not to the AFC, let alone the AFC North. That’s one good thing about the situation. GO STEELERS!

  • Doug Sawyer

If Shazier can truly run a sub 4.4 40 he’s better than a CB pick because he could essentially become a roving LB/S hybrid who could be asked take a Jimmy Graham or a Gronk out of the game…it’s an outstanding D weapon to have

  • Doug Sawyer

I read somewhere the coaches were happy with his weight 237lbs…that means to me they are going to use this kid in a very different way

we need to fill some more needs eventually no ?

  • METAL_HAMMER

Keep in mind, I didn’t state that Antonio Brown was a first round pick.

  • awlcohen

Something amiss here. Neither you guys nor anyone in the PGH media had a clue on this one. He was barely ever discussed as a possibility at any point. And this is the 15th pick, not the 32nd where it gets much harder to make a call So one of two things.
    1. You’re all clueless and uniformed.
    2. This is a terrible pick.

  • Addison

Who’s behind Worilds and Jarvis? The hold defense is a need. I just believe LBs make this defense. If a QB has 5-8 seconds to throw I don’t care who’s in the secondary someone will get open.

  • shawn

agreed, but not in the 2nd round … we can get depth later … what about that guy from col st. with the porter connection … depth guys can be projects but not high round picks … i think we are pretty set now at OLB … another pick in the late rounds and/or next draft would be fine

  • Addison

I got a feeling it’s going to be a WR or twitter is going to blow up. Haha can’t wait for tonight. I’m on the best player availble boat no matter what depth on the team.

  • SteelersDepot

You didn’t listen, did you? It’s easy to see who is clueless here.

  • srdan

Especially because this year we play vs the NFC south. Olsen and Graham are some of hte best in the game. TB just drafted for the NBA. Every year we play Gresham and eiffert, Jordan Camron and the Ravens TE happy offense twice.
