Todd McShay Already Mocking The Steelers A Cornerback/Safety In 2015

The 2015 NFL mock drafts are already in full swing and Todd McShay of ESPN.com even has one out for the first round already.

McShay has the Pittsburgh Steelers picking 21st overall in the 2015 NFL Draft and has them selecting LSU cornerback Jalen Mills.

McShay writes:

Mills brings very good size to the cornerback position, measuring in at 6 feet, 185. He should have a lot of playmaking opportunities in the LSU secondary this season.

Mills is McShay’s third cornerback off the board behind Oregon’s Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Florida State’s P.J. Williams.

Mills was recently named to the 2014 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch. In addition, fellow ESPN.com writer David Ching recently reported that Mills has found a new home at safety.

I sure hope that Mills is able to fill out a little bit more as he sure looks mighty lanky.

I’m going to go out on an early limb and guess that Mills will not be the Steelers first-round selection a year from now. I admit that’s a mighty brave prediction.

Happy Saturday, everybody.

    What a joke……

  • Brian Tollini

Looking forward to when they bring out the 2016 mock draft. Should be in June.

  • cencalsteeler

Already? Wow!! It is hard to argue with McShay as far as the positions he addressed though. I’d like to see the secondary addressed heavily in the first few rounds next year along with a top tier TE prospect.

  • WilliamSekinger

Unless there is a can’t miss stud CB, I’m gonna say the highest they will ever take a CB is the 2nd round

  • blackandgoldBullion

Bet u a beer it ends up being OLB just because of history and depth. Though TE is also possible. We better hope it’s not OT or DL because that would probably mean something went terribly wrong this year.

  • shawn

    amen to that !

  • dgh57

I think both Taylor and C. Allen have contracts expiring after 2014 but I still can see them not drafting a CB in the first round. I think they’ll resign Allen and then sign a FA at the CB position like they did this year with Mitchell and then draft a mid round CB. I think they’ll always draft the supporting cast around the CB position or at least as long as Colbert and Tomlin are around. The more I think about it the more that it seems the way to go.

  • Brian Miller

I just don’t think the Steelers ever want to end up paying that 2nd contract for a stud cornerback, so why even draft one that will require one? Not to mention they don’t need a shut down CB obviously for this defense.

  • Zach

I totally agree — we don’t need a shutdown corner indeed. I bet most don’t remember the last shutdown corner we had.

  • Steelers12328882

The guys I’ll be watching in college this year are Mario Edwards, DE USC, Devonte Fields, OLB/DE TCU, P.J. Williams and Ronald Darby, CBs FSU, Devin Funchess, TE Michigan, Stephon Diggs, WR Maryland, Dorial Green-Beckham, WR Eastern Illinois, Noah Spence, OLB/DE Ohio St., Jordan Jenkins, OLB/DE Georgia, Bernardrick McKinney, OLB/DE Mississippi St. and Doran Grant, CB Ohio St. If I had to pick one I’d go Noah Spence!

  • Shannon Stephenson

Looking at the roster today I would say that is accurate with TE possible being another position to look at. We seem to have youth throughout this whole team. It is starting to get exciting again.

  • cencalsteeler

Just another thought. We might want to take a hard look at the positions of the undrafted camp invites. That may be what the staff is looking to fill in next years draft. Of course, they’re trying to find a diamond in the rough, but my hunch there is a direct correlation between the two.

  • dave

I am going to watch some tape today on a prospect. They say he is built like a Steeler linebacker and he will cause mass destruction. His nickname is the LIZARD KING.

  • Lewis

Question is, will Mills be available at #32?

  • Brian Miller

Heck, i can’t remember the last shutdown corner we had…I would guess Woodson and/or Lake before he moved to safety?

  • Brian Miller

ha ha! I see what you did there!

  • WilliamSekinger

    Nice!

  • JamesB

Add these 3 CB’s Jalen Collins LSU, Josh Shaw USC and Trae Waynes MichSt. All 3 are either 6’1 or 6’2 (prototypical Steelers starter height) and can flat out ball

  • StarSpangledSteeler

This year it was widely assumed that the Steelers had Eric Ebron and Kyle Fuller very high on their draft board (higher than Shazier). It is very likely if the Lions and Bears had not snatched those two guys, one of them would be a Steeler today.

I would think those two positions (TE, CB) are the top positions we will be looking at in the 1st round of 2015. I mention this so that as you all are watching college football this year, you can be watching/scouting those positions for future discussions.

  • Big Joe

Unfortunately for Todd, I think the TE position and OLB positions are probably going to be higher on their laundry list of desired fills in Round One next year, but we’ll see. They’re very selective about the type of CB they want and they like to build them. I don’t know the triangle stats on the young man he mentioned, but if his speed isn’t in the mid-4.4 or neary 4.5, I don’t think they’ll pick him despite his size. The Steelers have plenty of options for the slot position coverage; what they’ll want is an outside CB with speed and length and those usually get selected way earlier than 21st.

  • RedCarpetDefense

Saw this kid the other day at the park footballin’ with his friends. Must’ve been 7th graders or so but this kid lined up as a WR and was crazy fast. Pretty good route tree, not afraid to go over the middle, made some contested catches with squirts hanging all over him (obvious pass interference) and even showed some nice ability high pointing the ball a couple times. Let’s see now if my calculation is correct…another 5yrs to finish high school then another 3 for college (assuming he comes out early)…that’s uh…ok…hmmm…I’m mocking him to the Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft…RIGHT NOOOWWWW..!!

    Take that McShay..!!

  • Matt Manzo

Just as long as you get a cut of that rookie contract! And don’t pay for any meals at Applebee’s!

  • Matt Manzo

I’m gonna put my scouting notebooks down for awhile and let you guys do all the work! I’m looking for big DBs and fast and strong OLBs! Also a really mean TE! I don’t care if he’s the fastest but I want another Eric Green there! I love Miller but I want some nastiness at TE.
With Ward gone our offense is little vanilla in the attitude department! And I want someone that can break a LBs jaw!!!

  • Cody Younkin

I could see them getting josh Shaw in the later rounds. Kid has good ballhawk ability.

  • Nolrog

Corner, yes, but we already have the future safeties on the roster. There will be bigger needs than another safety.

  • Nolrog

I still think they will sign a corner in free agency next year like they did with Mitchell to fill the S void from Clark.

  • PoKey21

Spence is Western PA born an raised I beleive. Only will be a true junior next year, but is suspended to start the season.

  • Steelers12328882

Oh man I didn’t know that. Just has the look of a strong side OLB in a 3-4.
