New Contract Numbers For Steelers K Shaun Suisham

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed kicker Shaun Suisham to contract extension several days ago and now we have the details of that deal.

According to Joel Corry, Suisham will reportedly earn base salaries of $855k, $2.595M, $2.4M, $2.4M and $2.4M from 2014-2018 and he apparently was given a $2.85 million signing bonus.

Because of the left over signing bonus money that Suisham had due on his last contract, his 2014 cap charge should be $1,762,500, according to the numbers Corry gave me. It was scheduled to be $1,425,000 before he signed the new deal.

YEAR BASE BONUS PREV CAP CHARGE
2014 $855,000 $570,000 $337,500 $1,762,500
2015 $2,595,000 $570,000 $- $3,165,000
2016 $2,400,000 $570,000 $- $2,970,000
2017 $2,400,000 $570,000 $- $2,970,000
2018 $2,400,000 $570,000 $- $2,970,000
TOTAL $10,650,000 $2,850,000 $- $13,500,000

About Dave Bryan

I am, I'm me. 40 something, retired and a life long Steelers fan.

Do we know the guaranteed amount?

  • SteelersDepot

    2014 base plus signing bonus

  • Matt Manzo

I’d like to see a few more 50 yarders made this year!

  • steeltown

So if i’m understanding correctly, around $3.7 guaranteed?

  • treeher

    Any performance incentives?

  • Ben Anderson

You won’t. Especially with the goal posts having been moved up 5 feet higher.

  • Ben Anderson

No so much that they can’t cut him later and swallow the cap hit, but a lot for a kicker.

  • ciscoNoDrink

What happened to the days of the 900,000 a year kicker.

  • joed32

The cross bar wasn’t moved up, just the uprights so the refs can batter tell if the kick is good.

  • CrazyTerry

3,7M for this year in real money 2.5M next year . If you are comfortable with his worth for this year being 3.7 and 6M plus over 2 years, then this is a good contract as chances are any dip in performance will get Suisham cut after that(Steelers usually will give him another year even if he sucks this year, which is why I include next year as almost guaranteed). I still think they should have negotiated harder. Maybe a half mil less for the next two years. AS I said before, these half millions add up.

  • Ben Anderson

Oh, well it would appear that I need to re-read the rules changes once more. My mistake.

  • Weiss Chad

Who actually makes longer than 50 traders at Heinz field anyway?

  • NW86

So if I calculate that correctly, since he was already due about $1.45M this year, looking at new money divided by the 4 new years, he will average right around $3M/yr. That would put him about 10th among kickers. Sounds about right to me.

  • Ben Anderson

Well, depending on how you view the contract, he either gets $12.645M in new money over 4 years (3.16 avg), or has a new contract for 5 years and $13.5M (2.7 avg), the latter being how it will actually apply to the cap in new dollars.
He’s either 7th or 8th. Janikowski is 7th at 3.06M avg and Succop is 8th at 2.708M avg. The point being that my earlier post about this being a lot for a kicker was off. I didn’t really consider it until I read your post.

  • steeltown

I look at it as $2.7 per for 5yrs w/ only $3.7guaranteed.. that, if im understanding the parameters correctly

  • joed32

You’re not the only one who thought that, in fact it’s not a bad idea.

  • Ben Anderson

I found myself actually being in favor of the Patriots’ suggestion (I know, sacrilege) of moving it back to the 25 and then coupling that with Tomlin’s suggestion that 2 point attempts be tried from the 1. Now, THAT would be exciting.

  • joed32

    I could live with those.

  • Pete Johnson

All you need to know about this deal, is Dave predicted it to be about 1/2 of what is actually is today on the Podcast. As did I a few days ago. Not that any of our opinions mean much, but Dave is pretty good with contracts and player values. And the Steelers just paid him double what he thought the market was. Yeah it isn’t a lot of money overall, but cap money is cap money. That is a solid 3 year (thru 2016) marriage before it makes any sense to cut him with the bonus money.

  • NW86

According to OvertheCap (the best cap site in my opinion), Janikowski is #1 at 3.77M and Succop is 12th at 2.75M

  • CrazyTerry

His range indoors hasn’t been that great either.

  • Weiss Chad

He is the most accurate kicker in team history I think..If your more accurate then Gary Anderson was than that’s saying something Imo.

  • Ben Anderson

I like OTC also, but they use the figures for extensions inclusive of the years eliminated by the extension. If a guy has 1 year left and gets a 5 year deal, they count it as a 6 year contract. At least they are consistent in one way or another.
I did not take into consideration that Squeezem’s base salary had gone from $1.425M to $855K.

  • Jerry Lynch

The guy was a serviceable, but not great kicker before coming to Da’Burgh where he became great in a difficult-to-kick-in stadium. He deserves his money.
