If Pittsburgh Steelers rookie fifth-round draft pick Wesley Johnson is going to make the final 53 man roster this year out of training camp, he’s going to really have to show a lot more position flexibility on the offensive line.
Saturday night in the Steelers 20-16 preseason loss to the New York Giants, the Vanderbilt product didn’t enter the game until the team’s final offensive possession of the game and he played all nine of his snaps at center.
So far during training camp, Johnson has been spotted playing left tackle, left guard and center and those are three positions that he primarily played in college.
As it looks right now, Johnson is on the outside of the roster bubble and looking in, but that can change very quickly if he starts receiving playing time on the left side of the line in the final three preseason games.
Currently, the Steelers are using Chris Hubbard and Bryant Browning as their second-team guards with Mike Adams and Guy Whimper serving as the second-team tackles. Cody Wallace, who the team signed to a three-year contract during the offseason, was the backup center Saturday night, as expected.
