Steelers Visit With Four More Defensive Players On Friday

The Pittsburgh Steelers were busy entertaining four more pre-draft visitors on Friday and today’s list included three defensive lineman and another defensive back.

Maryland defensive end Quinton Jefferson, South Carolina State defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, Northwestern defensive end Dean Lowry and Mississippi safety Trae Elston all visited with the Steelers on Friday.

Jefferson, a Pittsburgh native, measures in at 6-3, 289-pounds. he recorded 39 total tackles last season and 6.5 sacks. Hargrave, who measures in at 6-1, 309-pounds, had 59 tackles, 22 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks in 2015, along with 11 quarterback hits. Steelers defensive line coach John Mitchell was present for Hargrave’s March pro day as well.

As for the 6-6, 280-pound Lowry, he registered 52 total tackles in 2015 to go along with 3 sacks.

It’s obvious that the Steelers are looking at possibly drafting a defensive lineman this year as they’ve now brought in four so far for pre-draft visits. Earlier this week, Alabama defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson was brought in for a visit.

As for Elston, who played with current Steelers cornerback Senquez Golson while the two were at Mississippi, he figures to be selected in the later rounds of the 2016 NFL Draft. The Steelers have brought in quite a few safeties in for visits so far this month in addition to several mid-round cornerbacks.

We will have full breakdowns on all of the players in the coming days.

  • Jeff Papiernik

Yes! I was hoping they would bring in Hargrave. Hope there’s a breakdown of him at some point although I imagine his film is hard to come by.

  • Spencer Krick

Have you seen much of him? What do you like about him?

  • Lost Loves

That list is impressive! I don’t know Jefferson but I studied Lowry alil. Time to go look for film. Love Elston and Hargrave!

  • CP72

He’s definitely this new type of lineman we’re looking at. Saw him at the Shrine Game. He played really well. That being said I instantly wrote him off. He’s more of a one gapping, penetrate type. Times they are changing.

  • CP72

How is Lowery 6’6″ with 31″ arms….that seems strange.

  • Jeff Papiernik

He’s one of those versatile lineman that can play both NT and be a rotational DE which would be big for us. His height and arm length are not ideal, and his technique needs some coaching up as he’s definitely raw in that aspect. There’s also the concern with the level of competition he played against. But he’s very athletic, good motor, powerful. He won’t be able to contribute right away but in a year or so, he could be a force to be reckoned with.

  • PittsburghSports

Ugh saw the pic and thought Victor Ochi was coming in. Boo! I thought Jefferson was a 1-gapper. Lowry has those t-rex arms. Don’t know much about Elston. I think all three are considered late rd picks. Glad to hear we followed up with Hargrave though.

  • CP72

20 non-Pitt visits. Only two offensive players. Not one skill position visit.

  • PittsburghSports

There’s a couple games on draftbreakdown, but he played in both the Shrine game and Senior Bowl if you have those recorded.

  • GoSteelerz

Overall pleased with how we’re approaching this off-season. Really going after our team needs and bringing in (mostly) quality prospects to look at. Another day of good potential players for us.

  • Jeff Papiernik

Yeah I will have to check those out. I believe Alex said he would eventually break down every prospect brought in for a pre-draft visit, so I’ll be looking forward to that as well.

  • CP72

13.5 sacks and 22 TFLs from a defensive tackle is impressive. I know it was against lower level competition, but at least he dominated the lower level competition.

2015 pre-draft invites and pro day dinner player totals:

CB – 12 (selected in rd 2 and rd 4)
    OLB – 11 (selected in rd 1)
    TE – 7 (selected in rd 5)
    WR – 6 (selected in rd 3)

2016 pre-draft invites and pro day dinner player totals, so far:

    S – 8
    CB – 6
    DL – 6
    OT – 2

  • Biggie

Definitely like that they are bringing in defensive help guys from each round. Also like alot of the guys they are bringing in. Hargrave is very solid

  • falconsaftey43

Can you guys put a running list of all visits in these posts please?

  • Jeff Papiernik

What about Jatavis Brown? Isn’t he a LB? Also, who were the two dinners? Billings and Ridgeway?

  • PittsburghSports

Yeah there’s a couple I didn’t list, just because single digit. Jatavis Brown who would be a MLB or TE J.P. Hotlz. They had dinner with Billings and WJ3.

  • PittsburghSports

Plus I included DE Bronson Kaufusi, because it was reported he’s either coming in for an invite or private workout.

  • John Parks

This is gonna be a heavy def draft by PIT. On off no need for aa QB, rb, ol, or te. If we do draft off it could b a wr, or ol. I can see Peake at We in the 4th or the ol from Texas Tech in the same round. But def, def, def. Possibly a rb/wr/kr type if anything off. Let’s go black & yellow!

  • PittsburghSports

Top right of the page under 2016 NFL Draft

  • Jeff Papiernik

Yeah I didn’t count Holtz or Boyd because they’re local visits

  • PittsburghSports

    ahh yes Boyd too

  • Lost Loves

Lowry is a high effort guy. Looked powerful against Ball ST and controlled the OT. Generated some pressure but couldn’t finish.
Against Nebraska, I could see how his short reach hindered his play. Once the RT locked out his elbows, Lowry’s short arms weren’t able to reach the Tackle’s body. He is a penetrator type. I say 7th or PFA.

  • Vinhuddle

Anyone happen to know the rd projection for Hargrave? I remember his name several times this draft process under those “small schools/under the radar” type of headings.

  • falconsaftey43

    thanks man

  • Alex Kozora

Yup, just added Hargrave to my list. Look for him next week!

  • Vinhuddle

Little off topic, happen to know if Billings has visited?

  • Vinhuddle

Oops, should’ve read a little further down before asking about Billings lol

  • falconsaftey43

I’ve seen anywhere from late 1 to 3rd on him. Most have him going in the 2-3 range.

  • Vinhuddle

    Thanks fs43

  • PittsburghSports

I don’t think he has. Usually a Pro Day dinner is enough, and I don’t think they do dinner and a visit.

  • Vinhuddle

    Thanks P.S.

  • Jeff Papiernik

I think most have him as a 3rd round prospect

  • WreckIess

Hargrave is one of my favorite early to mid round guys. He was playing against some lower tier guys in college and it showed in a good way. He was absolutely dominate.

  • H.K. northern cali

Is there anyone here who would like to see the steelers double-dip on the d-line this yr? I would.

  • H.K. northern cali

U don’t see them taking a rb somewhere?

  • Brian Miller

    Thanks Pittsburgh Sports, good work!

  • draframe1

    T-rex 🙂

  • PittsburghSports

Thanks man. Kinda just posted it cause there’s so much smoke and mirrors talk about who we’re interested in, but if you look at last year, the interest numbers matchup very well with who we drafted. So far this year, it seems pretty obvious what 4 positions we’re most interested in.

  • Donald Tillman

I Agee Jeff!! I think he could be a dominant NT but more of a pass rusher than Billings in the Nickel.

  • Donald Tillman

I think he has the highest sparq score of any interior lineman in this draft

  • Jeff Papiernik

I think most people would take Billings over Hargrave though lol

  • Donald Tillman

I agree, but most people would have taken Eric Decker over AB!! LOL

  • Reg Sayhitodabadguy Hunt

Yeah was thinking the same thing for some reason this yr seems different than others looks like we’re on a mission

  • blackandgoldBullion

Yes. But they may take 2 CBs, plus a safety for sure. OL and WR perhaps or BPA. Already up to 7 and if some real good player happens to drop to them it could screw everything up. Plus, they has lost lots of ST guys, so they should probably get an ILB for depth and especially ST. Not enough picks.

I love so many of these 2nd and 3rd round picks as I think they have as much potential as some 1st rounders, that I wish they would trade down and get an extra 3rd. However, it’s extremely unlikely unless they really hate the value at 25. But I can dream.

  • blackandgoldBullion

I’ve been picking him on some mocks in the 3rd or 4th round when I don’t get Billings or anyone else earlier.

  • Jon Crissinger

Previous year he had 16 sacks

  • Jon Crissinger

If Pittsburgh wants Hargrave, I don’t think he makes it to our pick in round 2.

  • Jon Crissinger

Yessir. And something like 40 career sacks as a DT. His last two years he had 8 more sacks than Jason Taylor had his entire 4 years with Akron. And if I recall Jason Taylor was a pretty damn good edge rusher.

  • Superdriller316

If they can’t get Billings, Hargrave would be a great consolation prize.

  • Donald Tillman

I think he will be there at 58. I hope so anyway. Lol

  • Brian Miller

    Yes sir, I agree.
