Steelers Vs. Browns: Player Snap Counts – Week 17

The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Cleveland Browns 27-24 at home Sunday to close out their 2016 regular season and a few things stick out from that game when you look at the initial snap counts. Here is a recap.

First, while the Steelers chose to sit center Maurkice Pouncey against the Browns, all five of the other starters on the offensive line played every snap despite it being a meaningless game.

Running back DeAngelo Williams received a full load of playing time with starter Le’Veon Bell held out of action as he played56 of a possible 71 offensive snaps. Fitzgerald Toussaint played just 15 total offensive snaps in addition to his normal load on special teams.

Rookie wide receiver Demarcus Ayers led all wide receivers in playing time Sunday as he logged 66 snaps, 9 more than Eli Rogers. While dressed, wide receiver Sammie Coates did not play Sunday.

The Steelers chose not to use tackle Chris Hubbard much as an extra blocker as he was only on the field for 6 offensive plays.

Defensively for the Steelers, while he dressed on Sunday, linebacker James Harrison did not play and that resulted in Jarvis Jones playing most of the game. Fellow outside linebacker Anthony Chickillo also dressed but did not play. The Steelers played all other healthy defensive starters for the entire game and that includes inside linebackers Ryan Shazier and Lawrence Timmons.

Steelers defensive end Ricardo Mathews only played 8 snaps on defense before being forced from the game with an ankle injury.

I don’t understand why V. Williams didn’t get more snaps on defence, It would seem to be the perfect time to get him some work going into the playoffs.

Hear that noise Sammie….that’s Ayers and DHB passing you on the depth chart.

If not for the bad drop Ayers would’ve had 5 for 60 plus and a touchdown. This kid could be a real x-factor during the playoffs.

  • Michael James

In all honesty, Coates has all reasons to be concerned. If he doesn’t turn the corner soon he might not even make the roster next year. Our main deep threat will hopefully be back (Bryant) and Rogers has cemented his starting role as a slot receiver. Behind Ab, Bryant and Rogers there are probably only 2 spots and Ayers and Hamilton have all made big plays those last few weeks and look like more natural football players than Coates. Then you have DHB, who can do the same things Sammie does and is arguably the better special teamer.

  • CP72

I know everyone is excited about the prospect of Bryant coming back. Even if he doesn’t relapse (big if) we’re probably still 3 or 4 games into next season before he returns. Coates will have time to earn a spot, but I think he’s got a long way to go.

  • Big White

Interesting that not one player contributes to 100% of Special Teams snaps.

  • Big White

He does have two broken fingers, no??

  • Charles Haines

Hasn’t Tomlin seen enough from Fitz/Hamilton/Coates to at least try Gilbert at KR? WTF?

  • Jeff Papiernik

Why would he miss the first 3 or 4 games?

  • Shannon Stephenson

I do not understand the mind set but I can’t argue about going 11-5.

Justin Gilbert was back to receive to start the second half but it was a touchback. He then hurt his shoulder a little later and was out of the game.

  • There is no guarantee he’ll be reinstated. Guy who have been suspended for an entire year like him weren’t allowed back right away. They just deferred Aldon Smith’s reinstatement talks until March.

Good to see my man Big Dan get some heftier reps and a sack!!
Under-utilized too often in situations where he could help.

  • The facts:
If not for DeAngelo Williams’ plays that kept us away from safeties, and Darrius Heyward-Bey’s long run and strip, along with Landry Jones’ intelligence during that play to fall on the ball, we would have easily lost that game. Let’s give props where they are due. Man, they are definitely due here to the players I’ve mentioned.
