Steelers Meet With DL Carlos Watkins, Show Interest In TE Jordan Leggett

Some more updates from today’s biggest Pro Day – Clemson. Draft Insider Tony Pauline over at Draft Analyst has some good nuggets of information and the Pittsburgh Steelers are showing interest in at least two Tigers. Pauline reports the team met with DL Carlos Watkins last night and spent time during today’s workout talking with tight end Jordan Leggett.

On Watkins:

“Watkins met with the Pittsburgh Steelers last night — Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin were on hand today”

And Leggett:

“The Cincinnati Bengals spent a significant amount of time with Leggett who also met with the Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets.”

It’s unclear who attended Watkins’ meeting last night though you can assume Colbert and Tomlin were present. He didn’t workout at the Combine but weighed in at 6’3 309 with over 34 inch arms, making him a prototypical fit as a five tech in the Steelers’ system. A 2016 All-American, Watkins finished season with 82 tackles, 13.5 for a loss, and 10.5 sacks.

We’ve written plenty on Leggett, an athletic tight end who can be a downfield threat and gives effort as a blocker. Pauline notes teams were impressed with his strength in the run game during his workout. According to unofficial numbers, Leggett ran in the high 4.6’s and Watkins about a five-flat in the 40, strong numbers for both men.

  • Spencer Krick

Always room for a defensive lineman that can get after the QB.

  • Steve Johnson

They definitely need quality depth there. We seen what took place last year. Would be nice if everybody on Offense/Defense would be healthy if they make the playoffs in 2017. Heyward, Bryant, Coates, Bell. Man, just once I would like to see what a full arsenal would look like.

Nice! I could see Watkins as a 4th or 5th rd pick. That’s perfect range for us to find some competition for LT Walton.

  • PaeperCup

I do like Legett, but it’s just baffling that he has so much trouble with blocking. He’s got good size, and you’d think a school like Clemson has the resources to train him right….
If he’s an effort guy and a willing blocker, maybe we can help him out.

    4th or 5th round?

  • StarSpangledSteeler

Is anybody else concerned that we might not be able to re-sign Tuitt?

  • Spencer Krick

They’d be insane to let Tuitt walk.

  • PaeperCup

Trade him for 5 1st round draft picks.

  • Spencer Krick

Nay! I want to orchestrate a 32 team trade and own the entire sixth round! That way I can draft all of the Tom Bradys and Antonio Browns!

  • PaeperCup

Lol, 16 WR, 16 QBs taken in the 6 by the Steelers. One of them is bound to stick.

  • Rene Gonzalez

He is one of those key players that they just don’t let go, that’s why they don’t usually have cap space to spend in FA.

  • Alex Kozora

    Not at all.

  • Boots

Everytime I hear “gives effort as a blocker” I picture Jeff Van Gundy hanging on Alonzo Mourning’s leg!

Is the draft here yet??? Can’t wait!!

  • PaeperCup

Illinois pro day today too, did Steelers have anyone present?

  • Guest12

    Ha!

  • Boots

I’m sure we had scouts there

  • Jon Crissinger

They got comp picks that are tradeable now too. Might be like 18 QBs and 19 WRs

  • LucasY59

Ive been targeting him as a 3rd comp/4th rd option

I have the same thoughts on him, he came up with some clutch catches, but cant seem to use his size to help him be a decent Blocker

  • Applebite

T’is the season for frequent flyer miles…

  • LucasY59

I am hoping that guys like Malik McDowell, Chris Wormley, Jarron Jones, Montravius Adams, Jaleel Johnson, Nazair Jones, Carlos Watkins and Eddie Vanderdoes go before Tanoh Kpassagnon so that he can drop to the Steelers 3rd rd comp (or if they are really lucky the 4th)

  • ND_Steel

All this interest in TEs really makes you wonder if Green is coming back. The draft may just dictate that, if the right person fall to them, he could be gone.

  • Douglas Andrews

Leggett’s 4.6 is impressive. I watched him alot being a Clemson fan. My guess was about a 4.7. At any rate his game should translate well in the pros. Good hands able to get open and a willing blocker from what I’ve seen.

  • Michael James

I would be on board with a 4th rounder for Kpassagnon. I think that’s where you can get value. I’m not sure if they should take him before, though. He’s a long-term project and there are just too many other needs to fill (OLB, CB, slot CB, ILB, WR, TE).

I believe this as well. Green will be let go.

  • Donte Williams

i dont see them cutting Green not this year to have a dead money hit. maybe they want a better two TE option out there or run with 3 TEs nothing wrong with that Grimble may be the odd man out if a TE is drafted 3-5 range ill be shocked if they take one 1-2

  • LucasY59

I would be happy if he was there in the 4th (but that would require that pretty much all the guys I mentioned would need to be picked, or all the other teams ignore the DE position) he’s a small school developmental project so it is possible, but he had a really impressive combine and has high potential so I would be ok with them taking him with the comp if he is there

Watkins has some similar measurements as Hargrave he could take McCullers spot and provide interior pass rush
