The Terrible Podcast – Talking Passing Of Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney, Pre-Draft Visitors & More

Season 7, Episode 100 of The Terrible Podcast is now up and in this Friday show, David Todd and I spend the first half of it talking about the recent passing of Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney and the legacy that he left.

David and I share our favorite Rooney antidotes and discuss the overwhelming response to his passing on social media and in major media outlets as well as on the local level.

After finishing our thoughts on the passing of Rooney, David and I turn our attention to the Steelers pre-draft visitors and included in that is us discussing past years’ visitors and the role they played in ultimate selections.

David and I go over the Steelers most-recent pre-draft visitors and try to narrow down a few that might have great shots at being this year’s first round selection. We talk briefly about the upcoming pre-draft press conference that Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin are likely to have and one question we would like to see asked when that takes place.

We move on to discuss a few recent reports from Aditi Kinkhabwala of the NFL Network concerning the Steelers and if we think they have much validity.

David and I go over some other NFL news to close out this show and that includes us talking about Dean Blandino resigning from his vice president of officiating position.

As always, several other smaller talking points are mixed in throughout the show that are not highlighted here in this post.

The last couple of days have been…strange for me. I have no other connection to Pittsburgh or the Steelers other than being a fan of the team. And yet, every time I start reading a story online about Mr. Rooney, i find myself having to wipe tears from my eyes. It’s like a part of my childhood has died and I can never get it back again.

My hope for the future as a Steelers fan is that Art II continues to follow in his footsteps and takes care of this franchise befitting of his father and grand father. Because if there’s one lasting legacy of this franchise, it’s how the owners treat their team. As people, as a family. And I think that’s what has stuck with me as a young kid.

    Family does matter.

Who cares about what walk of life you come from? Everyone, somewhere, is an extension of somebody’s family. Do right by others and have faith in others to do the right thing. And when people fail to do so, help them up, dust them off and encourage them to do better the next time. We don’t simply throw people away. And don’t forget to add some tough love into that mix. You can’t be PC all the time, strong people require both sides of the equation, it’s the only way to handle adversity. The Steelers under Dan Rooney have carried that example over the years. Snowflakes don’t last in Pittsburgh. It’s by design, on purpose. Because adversity builds character. That’s the Steelers way. That’s just one of many things that Dan brought to the table. When you fall, you pick yourself up and show some fortitude. Quitting is not an option on or off the field. Dan wasn’t a quitter. He was a winner. 6 Lombardis back that up.

  • I must say, NFL Network on DirecTV is doing a kick-ass job! Since yesterday and the news about Steelers owner Dan Rooney’s passing, they have been showing nothing, but Steelers film. Great stuff!

Very good show today, guys. Glad to hear you cover a lot of bases, and open the show and spend a lot of time on Dan. It was a great and enjoyable listen today.

Christmas in April, indeed, Dave B.!
Obi Melifonwu or Marlon Humphrey and then Derek Rivers in the 2nd! I’d have to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.

So glad to hear Dave Todd say that “best player available” has been debunked. And it instead should be called “best player available AT position of need.” He hit the nail on the head on that one. I also had the exact same response as Todd when he said that Colbert might struggle to rattle off the pro-day visits. But what’s funny is, I thought the same thing as Bryan, in that I’d want to know where he was, if I had the opportunity to ask the question. That kind of information could prove to be invaluable, come research time for the Mock Draft Contest.

And thanks for bringing up a couple of the SPARQ scores in relation to these players. I hadn’t known for instance, that Jalen Myrick’s was as high as it was.

Lastly, great to hear you give Humphrey so much love and attention, Dave B. I have concurred for a bit that IF available, how can he not be in the conversation at 30? Box checker, indeed. And once I saw that he was falling in mock after mock, my ears (eyes) perked up considerably like yours has.
