Steelers 2017 Draft Class Have Been Assigned Their Jersey Numbers

The Pittsburgh Steelers entire 2017 draft class has now been issued their initial jersey numbers.

According to the team, first-round draft pick outside linebacker T.J. Watt will indeed wear No. 90 and that’s not subject to change.

Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, the team’s second-round draft pick this year, will start off with No. 13 and that’s subject to change, according to the team release. The Steelers first of two third-round selections, cornerback Cameron Sutton, will start off with No. 20.

Running back James Conner, a Pittsburgh product, will wear No. 30 and that appears to be set in stone. It was believed that Conner would wind up with No. 24, the number he wore at the University of Pittsburgh, back that turned out to not be the case.

Quarterback Joshua Dobbs, the Steelers fourth-round selection this year, will start off wearing No. 5, which was previously worn for a while by former quarterback Bruce Gradkowski.

Cornerback Brian Allen, the Steelers fifth-round selection this year out of Utah, has been initially issued No. 29.

Long snapper Colin Holba, the Steelers sixth-round selection this year, was given No. 49 and outside linebacker Keion Adams, the team’s seventh-round selection in 2017, will begin his career in Pittsburgh with No. 99, which was previously worn by former defensive end Brett Keisel.

Please keep in mind that all but Watt and Conner are subject to have their numbers changed moving forward.

  • xXWARisHELLXx

    Number 13 triggers me

  • Jeff Papiernik

Idk about you guys, but I already got my #49 jersey on pre-order.

  • PaeperCup

    Subject to change.

  • Dorian James

It would have looked cool if TJ kept his number 48,50,44,92/42

  • Matt Manzo

Wonder why Conner didn’t get or want 24?

  • Bob Fitzgerald

They are keeping 24 for revis

  • LucasY59

same reason Watt didnt want 42???

  • xXWARisHELLXx

    Coty Sensabaugh already claimed it

  • Steel City Slim

    You mean 48,50,98,92/42

  • stan

Edit: I see Jeff Papiernik made the same joke below.

  • T3xassteelers

How does a number be subject to change? Like why are Watt and Conner already set in stone?

Are all 1st round picks locked in already as people will be buying them?

  • T3xassteelers

Haha, that was a joke. 🙂

  • LucasY59

doesnt make a lot of sense, all the new players FA signings, futures contracts, UDFAs dont have #s assigned yet, would think the rookies kinda have a say in which # they get and as long as they make the roster they keep the # (unless a different # they want instead becomes available because a player is cut)

  • PaeperCup

    No, no it wasn’t. haha

  • T3xassteelers

Just buy it for the memes and all the funny looks you get!!

  • T3xassteelers

Ahh that’s true about that last part. But I guess I’m confused on why Watt and Conner have their number 100% locked up and not Juju or Sutton. Do Juju and Sutton not really want their numbers right now?

  • Jaybird

    Number 13 is bad JUJU.

  • LucasY59

I think the biggest thing is sales, the team knows that they will sell a lot of Watt and Conner jerseys and people will be more willing to buy now if they know the # wont change

  • LucasY59

??? roster on the steelers site doesnt have #s assigned for any of the FAs they signed

  • PaeperCup

    boom

  • Applebite

    But it’s not like he’s getting #7 either…

  • SouthernSteel

I wouldn’t order that #49 jersey yet….pretty sure they are going to bring out #75 from retirement for Holba…

  • LucasY59

I thought he would take #19

  • Jon Crissinger

    13 is Bad Juju

  • Jon Crissinger

I think those ones aren’t subject to change, because the players aren’t wanting to change them? Maybe Juju is trying to get his college #9 from the Boz and others might want to change if another number becomes available.

  • LucasY59

    JuJu cant wear #9, WRs # 10-19 and 80-89

  • T3xassteelers

This makes a TON of sense. Thank you. So, all 1st rounders in theory should be like this too

  • Beaver Falls Hosiery

If they all make the roster at some point in 2017 (and keep their current numbers):

#90 First worn by John Howle (1956) last by Ricardo Mathews (2016) and now T.J Watt

#13 First worn by Earl Harbes (1935) last by Jacoby Jones (2015) and now JuJu Smith-Schuster

#20 First worn by Wilbur Sortet (1934) last by Al-Hajj Shabazz (2016) and now Cameron Sutton

#30 First worn by Norn Greeney (1935) last by Jordan Todman (2015) and now James Conner

#5 First worn by Gene Augustfender (1935) last by Bruce Gradkowski (2015) and now Joshua Dobbs

#29 First worn by Ben Smith (1935) last by Shamarko Thomas (2016) and now Brian Allen

#49 First worn by Bob Thurban (1943) last by Sean McHugh (2009) and now Colin Holba

#99 First worn by Michael Minter (1994) last by Caushaud Lyons (2015) and now Keion Adams

  • Rene Gonzalez

I’m in a history class and this made me really laugh out loud.

  • Dorian James

I think he can take Vince.
And that’s my madden line up lol

  • SkoolHouseRoxx

I wish receivers could wear single digit jerseys.

  • Jon Crissinger

Gotcha, I forgot about that. He still might be looking at another number though

  • afrazier9

I guess that is the end of thomas experiment

  • SkoolHouseRoxx

    He was 29 wasn’t he!

  • Luke

That was the first thought I had. But i wish they gave him the vet min and let him continue to be a ST demon

  • Jaybird

Hopefully not for a few more years at least.

  • Luke

Because the team website is the end all be all

  • Michael James

Call me crazy, but a Holba jersey would be amazing in some way! 😀

  • Luke

    Cause Swaggy T

  • Jaybird

19 reminds me of that other USC reciever Keyshawn Johnson . Hopefully JUJU is a little less annoying than Keyshawn.

  • Jaybird

    The world needs more laughter.

  • NimbusHex

    I’m feeling a Smith-Schuster 13 jersey.

  • CP72

Thinking the #90 color rush jersey is in my future. .

  • Denny

I would speculate the same thing. Maybe the others prefer numbers that may come available when the roster is cut to 50.

  • LucasY59

…they usually have the correct information

  • LucasY59

yeah I just thought 19 was the closest thing he could get to his college #, but this draft class doesnt seem to be all that interested in keeping college #s (other than the LS)

  • deuce_seven

Go ahead and laugh. When Holba hangs ’em up 15 years from now, the NFL will retire #49 league-wide.

  • Applebite

JuJu should ask Swann if he can get his number…just tossing it out there.

We’ll see how many Steelers fans are ‘triggered’ by that…or whatever that means.

  • Mitch

It’s not so much that JuJu should ask Swann for his former number, but rather he should ask Darrius Heyward-Bey to give up his current number. Or maybe ask permission from any of the 14 other players who have worn 88 since Swann retired.

Also, you used “triggered” wrong. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  • Michael Mosgrove

i like cam sutton but he has huge shoes to fill to reach the potential of the last #20. will allen. one of my favorite players ever.

  • Rotten Sircus

Jacob Hagen has #42 if he doesn’t make the team Watt can still grab it ..might get your wish !!!

  • Terrible Towlie

    Ted Ginn does

  • SkoolHouseRoxx

    Wait a minute….

  • mhurk

With His 4.5 speed I can see a CenterSneak in the mix.

  • 6 ring circus

So much for understanding the current “hip talk” lol. Did I just date myself?!

  • 6 ring circus

He was a lot better in his second iteration, but then he tailed off.

  • 6 ring circus

These assigned numbers are all wrong, to me, in my head. It all started with Bud Dupree – 48? C’mon, man…

  • Mitch

Nah, I’m sure there are plenty of millennials who don’t know what it means either. I should clarify, the way you phrased it in the sentence was fine. But one isn’t really “triggered” by JJSS asking Swann for a number. The idea is that it brings back bad memories. So the user below could be referring to 13 in general being an unlucky number, or more likely referring to one (or both) of the last two players who wore it: Jacoby Jones and/or Dri Archer.

  • Dan

Get the Bumblebee. It comes with a gold jacket, like automatically.

  • HiVul

Now I’m wondering what you think “triggered” means, because I’m a millennial and that’s exactly how people use it.

  • Adam Lott

    I’m surprised Dobbs doesn’t have 11

  • Mitch

I’m a millennial too and as I said below, it’s about bad memories. When is the last time we were horrified by an 88? Emmanuel Sanders? Disappointing but not trigger-worthy, and DHB currently wears it well. JJSS asking for 88 wouldn’t trigger any bad memories.

Conversely, wearing 13 could trigger bad memories of Jacoby Jones or Dri Archer, two terrible players. And now he wears their old jersey number. Triggered.

  • Michael Mosgrove

he got hurt at the end but easily one of my top 10 favorite steelers of all time.

  • Matt Manzo

That’s was my first thought, but they gave it to Doran Grant.

  • Matt Manzo

    Cool!

  • HiVul

Usually it just means to cause to be upset, not really as specific as all that

  • Luke

And we see how that panned out. (lol) Ike’s number deserves to be on the shelf for at least a few seasons, not retire it completely of course but he was a pallbearer for Mr. Rooney for crying out loud the dude deserves a few seasons of goodwill

  • Matt Manzo

I believe in shelving the greats for a year or two! Ike and LT deserve that respect.

  • Mitch

That’s fair. I guess it also looked awkward to me in this context because I can’t imagine anyone being triggered, or caring at all, if JJSS asked Swann for permission to wear 88. Especially, as I keep saying, 15 players have worn it since Swann including DHB currently wearing it.
