The Terrible Podcast – Talking Steelers 2017 Draft, Veteran Roster Spot Security Reset & More

Season 7, Episode 108 of The Terrible Podcast is now up and in this Monday show, David Todd is back and we kick things off with his entire thoughts on the Pittsburgh Steelers 2017 NFL Draft.

After David gives his thoughts on the Steelers eight selections, we talk pretty extensively about cornerback Cameron Sutton and running back James Conner. We also discuss the chances of cornerback Brian Allen making the final 53-man roster as a rookie.

With the draft behind us, David and I discuss the future statues of cornerback William Gay, linebacker Arthur Moats and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey as it relates to ranking each’s job security at this point.

David and I talk a little more about the team’s decision to draft a long snapper and quickly go over which of the undrafted free agents has the best shot at sticking around a little while.

As always, several other smaller talking points are mixed in throughout the show that are not highlighted here in this post.

I will solve it for you . DHB is gone and Gay should be gone . Moats still has value. Undrafted free agents with a shot . Orndoff . Webb. Kallon, Shell all have a chance at the PS.

  • John

Moats made picks for us on stage at the draft. Does Dave really think they are going to cut him a couple months later? Agree on DHB. He’s out at WR. We will see on Gay etc.

  • Lambert58

Gay should not be gone. He should be an experienced backup off the bench.

The sounds been good the last couple of podcasts! I think the sound gremlin went to live with Alex over the weekend. Though the sound on his last bedroom draft update was ok. Thanks to both of you for fixing the problems.

I hope allen makes the roster and pushes out gay

Steelers hold on to DBs way past their prime. Gay was alright last season but time to move on.

    DHB doesn’t have hands.

    I like Brian Allen’s chances to make the 53 and here’s why…

    1) Special Teams. At 6’3″ 215 pounds running a 4.43, Allen has all the athletic ability necessary to beat out Gay and Sensabaugh and Golson on special teams units. And as we all know, the final roster spots always go to the best special teamers.

    2) Position flexibility. Brian Allen has the raw ability to play either CB or FS. That is a BIG deal when you’re talking about the final DB spot. If one of our starting safeties goes down (which is highly likely imo) Golden is the only back up I feel even moderately comfortable with. I do not think Willie Gay would be any better than Dangerfield. And I don’t think any of the other CB’s (Sensabaugh, Golson, Sutton) could handle the deep pass defense or the tackling as well as Allen.

    3) Going young. The front office has made a concerted effort to get younger on defense. They started two rookie DB’s last year, and both of them performed better than expected. They are likely encouraged to follow the same pattern. Young + Healthy + Fast + Long = Value.

Arthur Moats will be cut after camp for two reasons. 1. He is being paid waaaaay too much, and as David Todd incorrectly stated, he is not Dupree’s backup. Chickilo has taken over that position as of last season. He is the 3rd LOLB. 2. You will have Harrison, Dupree, Watt, and Chicklo as your starters and backups, and Kieon Adams will make a 5th. Thanks for all your hard work Moats. Bubye.

I was not against JJSS, I thought it would be Godwin however so was bit surprised of the choice. I would like to be devils advocate though with Martavis Bryant. Everyone is saying that he won’t get a second contract but if he puts up huge numbers and stays clean over the next two years do you really expect him to walk free and clear? Potentially he has more upside than any of the other receivers they have, if you assume AB is actually at his potential. Why wouldn’t they slap the a tag on him at minimum, if he is that good someone will pay him. He isn’t a bad kid to me more immature than anything(didn’t beat his girlfriend or kick a dog). Granted this is his last chance but if he is clean for two years he won’t just walk.
