The NFL owners meetings get underway Monday down in Florida at that means the 2012 compensatory draft picks will be awarded for 2011 unrestricted free agents lost sometime this week. Compensatory picks are awarded by using a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors and is also weighed against any unrestricted free agents signed from other teams in addition. The formula that is used to determine those picks was developed by the NFL Management Council and has never been made public. The Steelers lost three unrestricted free agents last season in tight end Matt Spaeth, defensive Read more [...]
It is now being confirmed that Pittsburgh Steelers unrestricted free agent cornerback William Gay has indeed signed with the Arizona Cardinals and will not be returning to the Steelers in 2012. Gay started at the left outside cornerback spot for the Steelers in 2012 from week 2 on after Bryant McFadden lost the spot following the week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. When the Steelers would go to their nickel sub-package last year, Gay shifted inside to the nickel corner spot and Keenan Lewis came in as the left corner. Lewis appears to be the odds on favorite now to replace Gay initially, but Read more [...]
In the world of Twitter some things may not seem as the appear, so you have to be careful with what you read, but judging by the last tweet by William Gay, it appears he has chosen to play for the Arizona Cardinals next season. It should be noted that Gay played his college ball at Louisville and they too are Cardinals. Gay made free agent visits to the Cardinals, Denver Broncos and the Tennessee Titans and reportedly also had a deal on the table from the Pittsburgh Steelers as well. If indeed Gay did sign with the Cardinals, he would be reunited with former Steelers defensive backs coach Ray Read more [...]
Pittsburgh Steelers President Art Rooney II told Scott Brown from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review on Friday that he remains hopefully that the team will get restricted free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace signed to a long-term deal at some point. Rooney II said he did not offer up a time frame as to when that might be done and was quoted as saying, "The sooner the better as far as we're concerned but there's two parties to it. We'll have to see what we agree on so I don't want to put any particular time frame on it or restrictions on it because these things take time and I wouldn't want to box myself Read more [...]
Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee, reports that the San Francisco 49ers looked into Steelers restricted free agent wide receiver Mike Wallace since free agency began and were told that Wallace was looking for a contract that surpasses the eight-year, $120 million one that Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald signed last year. That is a pretty huge demand for sure and if indeed it is true, you can be pretty sure you do not have to worry about him getting any offer sheets as that request is outrageous. While he would return on his one year tender of nearly $2.75 million, there is Read more [...]

Cardinals Bring In William Gay For A Visit Monday

It should come as no surprise that the Arizona Cardinals brought Pittsburgh Steelers free agent cornerback William Gay in for a visit on Monday as the Cardinals defensive coordinator is Ray Horton, who coached the Steelers defensive backs prior to leaving for Arizona. Gay is an unrestricted free agent and is free to sign with any team. Gay has said his hopes were that he would remain in Pittsburgh for the upcoming season and general manager Kevin Colbert has left that open to happening as well. Gay was unrestricted last season and received little to no attention during the free agency period. Read more [...]

It is no secret that the Pittsburgh Steelers had serious salary cap issues heading into the 2012 season and it was easy to see the pending salary cap hell that was coming. I wrote about the forthcoming hell last September as the numbers told the story pretty easily. Lately several have been questioning the abilities of Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and chief contract negotiator and capologist Omar Khan and wondering how they could let things get to where they are right now. Most of the issues that the Steelers have right now date back to the 2010 uncapped season. Both Colbert and Read more [...]

Former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner joined 93.7 The Fan to talk about Todd Haley, his former offensive coordinator in Arizona. Dejan Kovacevic wrote about the ongoing Hines Ward saga and how the Steelers need to let Ward know his 2012 status first and face to face. Labriola and Mike Prisuta also teamed up after the Haley press conference last week for a new episode of Agree or Disagree that mostly centers around the hire of Haley. Some more Read more [...]

Let Wallace Walk? Not Such A Crazy Idea

By Jeremy Hritz In 2005, the Pittsburgh Steelers won a Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks with receivers Hines Ward, Antwaan Randle El, and Cedrick Wilson. Again in 2008, the Steelers captured their sixth Lombardi against another NFC West opponent in the Arizona Cardinals with Ward, Santonio Holmes, and Nate Washington. Wilson, Randle El, and Washington were solid, Holmes was clutch, and Ward is a future Hall of Famer. Outside of Washington, none of these guys were burners who could successfully get vertical, but they were all reliable and able to be depended on for earning crucial first Read more [...]
