Broncos Beat Steelers 34-17 – Game Notes

The Steelers lost to the Denver Broncos 34-17 in the 3rd preseason game of the 2010 season. Below are my notes and nuggets I kept on the game along with my observations. I have much more coming on this game and am working through the night. These are initial reactions of mine as I am about to watch the game a second time and begin working up tape selections. Below are the notes I compiled throughout the game. remember these are initial reactions one time through the game. Ben Roethlisberger looked more ready to start a season than any other season I have ever seen. Too bad we have to wait at Read more [...]
Ok, we are now half way through preseason games and training camp has officially broken. We have had quite a bit of game footage and information to digest and I am ready to revamp my 53 man roster prediction as the Steelers head into week 3 of the preseason against the Denver Broncos. Below are the changes and the reasoning for the add and drops. There is no need to keep Justin Hartwig now. I wrote about this way back on July 1st that he was not a lock and it looks like it is coming to fruition. Maurkice Pouncey is ready and Doug Legursky can back him up. Sure, Hartwig played guard before, but Read more [...]
Saturday the Steelers will travel to New York to play the Giants in the second preseason game of the 2010 season. Per my normal routine, I have listed below 10 things to look for Saturday heading into the game. Robo Kickoff Guy Watch #2? - Last week we were teased that Daniel Sepulveda could likely be allowed to kickoff against the Lions. It did not happen and as we showed on video this past week, nothing has changed with Jeff Reed and his kickoffs. This could be a huge step forward with special teams if Sepulveda can nail a few. Let's hope he gets quite a few chances to show what he has on Read more [...]

It is hard to imagine that the only active starting cornerback in the NFL to win two Super Bowls would finish his career in a uniform other than a Steelers one, but that is exactly what likely will happen with Ike Taylor. Taylor is entering the final year of a $23.75 million contract extension he signed in 2006 and regardless of his play in 2010, just will not be a priority next offseason for the Steelers. It is yet to be seen what type of tag if any will be included in a new NFL CBA, but the Steelers would likely not use it on Ike anyway. A healthy, productive season by "Face Me Ike" will price Read more [...]

It looks like the Steelers are indeed done with contracts for the offseason and once the season starts, no new deals are likely to be done, especially with the cloudy NFL labor situation. To the best of my calculations, the Steelers have 25 of 81 players on the final year of their current contract. I did not prioritize them below, but it is not hard to pick out those that are high profile moving forward. Those players would be: LaMarr Woodley, Ike Taylor, Jeff Reed and Daniel Sepulveda in my opinion. Dennis Dixon, Willie Colon and Trai Essex are fringe at this point. I have included a blurb on Read more [...]
Part 2 of the Ask The Steelers segment with veteran linebacker Larry Foote is now up on Steelers.com. Foote says the Detroit locker room was an awkward situation last season and says you can’t compare it to Pittsburgh. Steelers safety Troy Polamalu talked briefly to Doug Farrar about defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau, his knee status and having to start the season without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Linebacker Derrick Doggett has landed back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers after a short offseason stay on the Steelers roster. Winnipeg has special teams problems and Doggett excels in that Read more [...]
Steelers defensive end Nick Eason said he should be close to full strength for training camp after missing the final two weeks of OTA practices following emergency an appendectomy in which part of his colon was also removed. Eason said he plans to keep his weight down following a loss of 28 pounds so it will be interesting to see what he looks like when he arrives at Latrobe. It is no secret that Mexico is Steeler Country and a few of the younger players got a taste of the International Steeler Nation at a one-day football camp in Mexico City last weekend. Mike Wallace, Ziggy Hood, Keenan Lewis Read more [...]

Steelers Sign 5th Round Draft Pick CB Crezdon Butler

As expected, the Steelers signed cornerback and 5th round draft pick Crezdon Butler to three-year contract that totals out at just over $1.334 million dollars including a $119,000 signing bonus and breaks down base wise as follows: 2010: $320,000, 2011: $405,000 and 2012: $490,000. Butler was the second of three 5th round draft picks the Steelers had and the 164th player taken overall in the 2010 NFL draft. At Clemson, Butler received playing time in all 13 games as a freshman, and then became a starter as a sophomore and never gave up his starting spot. He was an honorable mention all-ACC honoree Read more [...]
The Steelers continued on in their OTA session on Wednesday and head coach Mike Tomlin met the media to answer a few questions. You can listen to the audio below from the PPG. Scott Brown has the transcript as well. [audio:http://www.post-gazette.com/downloads/20100602_tomlin.mp3] Wide receiver Hines Ward and center Justin Hartwig have been limited during offseason practices thus far, but Tomlin addressed the Hartwig situation when asked on Wednesday. He is still recovering from the shoulder surgery he had in the offseason and Tomlin sees no reason to rush him back. He reportedly be ready come Read more [...]

Steelers Draft Recap – Class Of 2010

The Steelers 2010 draft is now in the books. The 3 day event started slow paced on day 1 and 2, but day 3 was a whirlwind. I am still trying to catch up and will likely work through the mid morning. It was an old school draft so to speak. "In Colbert We Trust", I need to always remind myself this. I started to lose the faith after Friday night, but after the 4 rounds on Saturday, everything makes much more sense. Here is a quick recap. Round 1 was as good as pick as any, especially if you like versatile offensive linemen. Florida center Maurkice Pouncey should be with Steelers for a long time. Read more [...]
Steelers selected CB Crezdon Butler with the 164th selection 33rd pick in the 5th round Of 2010 NFL Draft. Butler is a 6 foot corner out of Clemson that was a three year starter. While at Clemson ,the Tigers ranked in the top 15 in the nation in pass defense. Butler only had one interception last season, but was not thrown out a bunch either. Not really gifted as a tackler, but is not afraid to hit and has trouble getting separated from blockers as well. Butler has good size for a corner and possesses good straight line speed, but lacks great change of direction in coverage and lateral quickness Read more [...]
