The speculation is now over as Max Starks said upon his arrival to training camp, that he will remain the Steelers left tackle and newly signed free agent Flozell Adams will move to the right tackle spot. Starks indicated that the coaching staff wants as much continuity possible on the offensive line. Starks said he volunteered to move back to the right side, but the coaches said no. In related news, Trai Essex has been told he will remain working at the right guard position and compete with first round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey for the starting spot.

Friday is almost upon us and the Steelers will start arriving in Latrobe for the 2010 training camp. Besides all the questions surrounding quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, I have compiled 6 questions that need answers before camp breaks. 1. Is Troy Polamalu healthy? - It is no secret safety Troy Polamalu is the catalyst on defense. Reportedly he is healthy and ready to go after missing 11 games due to a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. The biggest test will be when the tackling starts and most would expect he will be eased into action. 2. Can the offensive line gel quickly? Read more [...]

Steelers Sign Free Agent T Flozell Adams

On the eve of training camp the Steelers signed free agent tackle Flozell Adams to a two-year contract according to Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network. Financial terms were not immediately disclosed, but it is believe to be a front loaded deal around worth $7.5 million with no signing bonus. If he makes the team, Adams will receive a $2.5 million salary this season and his salary for 2011 is $5 million, none of it guaranteed. This would make Adams likely a one year stop gap. Adams originally was a second-round pick out of Michigan State in 1998 by the Dallas Cowboys and has started 178 of 182 Read more [...]
Jeff Sperbeck, the agent for backup quarterback Dennis Dixon, is sounding off that Dixon did not get enough time with the first-team offense during offseason workouts for the coaching staff to fully evaluate his development. Sperbeck questions why Byron Leftwich is ahead of his client on the depth chart after being brought back from Tampa. This is just an agent posturing for a client in a contract year in my opinion. I have faith the starting job is still not fully decided at this time. Dixon needs to just take it. Linebacker LaMarr Woodley is responding to criticism that he is using the media Read more [...]
The sagging real estate market and economy has taken down another victim this time in the form of Steelers all time great center Dermontti Dawson. Dawson filed for bankruptcy in the Eastern District of Kentucky United States Bankruptcy Court. We wish Dirt the best in his attempt to get reorganized financially. Craig Wolfley explains the Steelers old saying "Hunker-Down-Dawg" and how it relates to the Steelers and the recent loss of right tackle Willie Colon to a season ending injury. Wolf goes on to say that offensive line play is as much attitude as it is "athletic-tude." Hunter Ansley of Read more [...]

Just How Safe Is Center Justin Hartwig?

My training camp preview of the offensive line is forthcoming in about a week, but I wanted to focus in on veteran center Justin Hartwig for a post. Hartwig has been slowed all Spring and Summer following shoulder surgery and has not done much of anything in shorts during OTA sessions. Head coach Mike Tomlin said there is no reason to rush Hartwig given his experience and familiarity with the offense and it has given him a chance to get a long hard look at Doug Legursky with the first team and also have worked second year draft pick Kraig Urbik there as well in the minis. It is no secret that this Read more [...]

Steelers Leaning To Moving Essex To Left Tackle?

NFL.com reporter Jason La Canfora is reporting on Twitter that the Steelers are seriously considering moving right guard Trai Essex to left tackle and current left tackle Max Starks to the right tackle spot in place of the injured Willie Colon. Colon had surgery this morning on his right Achilles and is lost for the season as most know. The Steelers had brought in free agent tackle Flozell Adams on Tuesday for a look, but could be asking as much as 4 million a year, which is way out of line for what the Steelers would want to pay him. I mentioned several options myself at right tackle, but La Canfora Read more [...]
Not only did the Steelers lose right tackle Willie Colon for the year on Monday, it has now been announced that rookie offensive lineman Chris Scott suffered a foot injury while working out at the University of Tennessee last week as well. Both Colon and Scott are scheduled to have to surgery on Wednesday. Colon tore his right Achilles and will be out for the year. The seriousness of the foot injury to Scott, one of the Steelers fifth-round picks n this year's draft, is unknown, but he surely will not be ready for the start of training camp regardless. Being down two lineman now justifies the reason Read more [...]
