Here we are and here we go. One more win and the Steelers capture their 7th championship, but to do so they must get past another storied and classy franchise in the Green Bay Packers. The Packers deserve to be in this game and have made the run as the 6th seed much like the Steelers did back in 2005. The Packers have an offense that can go vertical through the air and strike with the big play behind the arm of Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers 2010 defense has been consistent all year, and very strong against the run. The Packers coaching staff is also littered with several former Steelers players and Read more [...]

Steelers rookie center Maurkice Pouncey told Chris Berman of ESPN he has a 75% chance to play Sunday in Super Bowl XLV against the Green Bay Packers. Pouncey told Berman on Tuesday Media Day that he feels good since getting the left ankle out of the cast and that is still a nasty purple color. He says it is just a pretty bad high ankle sprain and that he hopes to get on the bike and in the pool later today to rehab it more. Video of the Pouncey interview below. If you read this and believe in the power of prayer, I would pray even harder. Saying that it is still a nasty purple on Tuesday, makes Read more [...]

Steelers Packers Explosive Play Stats Breakdown

The legendary coach Bill Walsh wrote in his book, Finding The Winning Edge, that a team needs to generate explosive plays to gain an advantage over their opponent. Walsh described an explosive play as any offensive play that gains 20 or more yards. At the time Walsh wrote that the current stats at the time showed that teams that had a two or more explosive plays than their opponent did, won the game 80-85 percent of the time. In the tables below, I have broken down both the Steelers and Packers explosive plays by week and by run and pass for both the offense and defense. You will also see the Read more [...]
I thought it would be fun to look at Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers passing stats in the 3 playoff games against different types of rushes. I have the overall totals in the first table and then each game broken down by each time he dropped back in order that it happened. I also logged the scrambles as well as the plays that resulted in a penalty on either the offense and defense. In addition I logged whether or not the opposing team blitzed and the personnel that was blitzing. The numbers are pretty much what you would expect from Rodgers. When teams have only rushed 3 and 4 pass rushers, Read more [...]

Steelers Super Bowl Roster Will Include Tough Decisions

Super Bowl XLV is still more than a week and a half away and already the Steelers are faced with some tough decisions for the game day roster on Super Bowl Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. It is no surprise that rookie center Maurkice Pouncey is looking real doubtful to be ready after his high left ankle sprain suffered in the AFC Championship Game against the New York Jets. The Steelers are treating it very aggressively thus far, by putting the injured ankle in a hard cast and forcing Pouncey to use crutches to keep all the weight off it. ESPN medical expert Stephania Bell said on Wednesday Read more [...]
