Channel 11 news reporter Julie Fine talked with Steelers players about the release of kicker Jeff Reed at an NFL event in Pittsburgh Tuesday night. Ron Cook of the Post-Gazette writes how he feels the Steelers made a wrong move by waiving Reed. I pretty much voiced the same views. Former Steeler and current radio broadcaster Craig Wolfley blogged about the NFL circle of life and his dealings with Reed as well. [phpbay]Steelers Jeff Reed, 3, "", ""[/phpbay] Bengals beat writer Joe Reedy tells you about the Reed waiver process and why he thinks teams will wait to see if he clears waivers Read more [...]
Ron Cook wrote this morning that Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith was told he would be out 8-9 weeks with partially torn triceps. That puts him perhaps returning for the Panthers game. Hopefully no other injuries occur. Ed Bouchette reports that crowd noise was a huge factor Sunday night in New Orleans and it apparently caught the Steelers players and coaches off-guard and left them confused. Steelers safety Troy Polamalu says he blew an assignment that led to a 50-yard reception by Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem in the fourth quarter Sunday night and I believe is being too hard on Read more [...]
Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is working out with with new quarterbacks coach George Whitfield Jr. at Hampton High School's Fridley Field during his four-game NFL ban according to Hampton athletic director Bill Cardone. Former Steelers running back Jerome Bettis, center Dermontti Dawson, safety Donnie Shell, linebacker Kevin Greene, kicker Gary Anderson, coach Buddy Parker, defensive coordinator Bud Carson, player personnel head Art Rooney Jr. and scout Bill Nunn headline a handful of Steelers nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2011. Steelers reserve lineman Jonathan Read more [...]
Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich told PPG beat writer Ed Bouchette that he’s shooting for a return to play against Tennessee, the second game of the season. I think that is a little optimistic on Leftwich's part. I would look for a return against his former team, Tampa. Left cornerback Bryant McFadden returned to practice on Monday and likely will start Sunday against the Falcons. McFadden has been out since injuring his pectoral muscle against the Giants in preseason. Mark Madden is finally getting around to commenting on the Ben Roethlisberger suspension length compared to that of Read more [...]
Mike Tomlin said on Wednesday that Antonio Brown will get more work this week as a punt and kickoff returner and punter Daniel Sepulveda also will kick off for the second consecutive game. Tomlin liked the work of each it appears. Speaking of Sepulveda, yesterday we looked at his kickoff hang times, but PPG columnist Ron Cook looks at his hitting and tackling in an entertaining piece. Keenan Lewis will start at left cornerback against Denver as Bryant McFadden will likely sit out Sunday after suffering a right pectoral muscle injury against the Giants. Neither Maurkice Pouncey nor rookie running back Jonathan Dwyer is expected to be sidelined very long with their hamstring problems. Guard Ramon Foster could resume light workouts as early as today. Casey Hampton was also held out on Sunday as well with a hamstring strain, but it is not deemed serious. Craig Wolfley has a look at new offensive line coach Sean Kugler and how he has brought a throwback mentality to the Steelers offensive line  and is teaching more "technically powerful" adjustments. Ed Bouchette writes that there have been internal discussions on the Steelers about whether Read more [...]
ESPN North blogger James Walker reported on Monday that linebacker LaMarr Woodley would not be holding out this training camp. I am not sure why this was treated as breaking news around Steeler Nation as Woodley has said along he would report on time. Nearly every interview he has stated that. To me, this is a little media sensationalism trying to stir things up one last time before camp. It's not news, people. Washington Observer writer Dale Lolley suggest that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger ease the burden on his teammates on Friday or Saturday and address the media questions surrounding his Read more [...]
In so many words Thursday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin named Byron Leftwich the team's No. 1 quarterback Thursday following the conclusion of offseason practices. Dennis Dixon will be No. 2 followed by Charlie Batch. Scott Brown speculates that Dixon would have to play lights out during the preseason to unseat Leftwich as the No. 1. That is not impossible mind you, but unprobable. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin had glowing words for first-round draft pick Maurkice Pouncey on Thursday saying Pouncey could be a candidate to start at right guard and still a candidate for center as well. Tomlin Read more [...]
Judging by this article in the Tribune-Review this morning, the Orlando Police department will write a report for the March 7th incident between Santonio Holmes and Anshonone Mills. The article also has the transgression of events that happened that night. Santonio told ESPN's Rachel Nichols that he "didn't do anything" and expects the matter to be dealt with quickly. This will likely cost Holmes an out of court payoff, but that is speculation on my part. Mills is seeking more than $15,000 in damages from Holmes and I bet she gets that and more. Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, speculates Read more [...]
Steelers.com has a piece up on new Hall of Famer and Steelers defensive coordinator, Dick LeBeau. Thanks to our blog readers, Facebook fans and Twitter followers, Steelers Depot has made it to the Elite 8 round of the 2010 Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament. One more win would put us in the Final Four out of the MOE MANTHA DIVISION. We are humbled and thankful. Please keep this Cinderella run alive, vote here! The Ratbirds have signed wide receiver Donte' Stallworth. The Ravens have five receivers on their roster who will become free agents in some capacity. I can't help but snicker at this Read more [...]
Steelers GM and Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert sat down with Bob Labriola from Steelers.com for part one of a candid interview. It looks as if the Steelers will be able to keep executive and salary cap guru, Omar Khan, as Green Bay Packers director of football operations John Schneider has been chosen as the new general manager of the Seattle Seahawks, league and team sources said. Even though the Steelers will keep Khan, defensive back coach Ray Horton could be the next defensive coordinator of the University of Houston after interviewing with the school last Friday. Mike Bires of the Beaver County Times recounts the surreal day yesterday in Pittsburgh with the Ben Roethlisberger press conference. Steeler fans also weigh in on the Big Ben statement. Ron Cook of the Post-Gazette explains how he thinks the Ben Roethlisberger situation will not greatly impact the Steelers going into training camp. In the new issue of Rolling Stone magazine, safety Troy Polamalu is listed as one of the worlds most fearless athletes. He is referenced as the "NFL's Heat-Seeking Missile". Steelers.com has posted part 2 of the fan Q & A with rookie receiver Mike Wallace and Read more [...]
